Right now I do it manually but what would be the best way to get alerts when a website is back online?

Currently I use Firefox.

Do you own the website? If yes, does it run Linux? If yes to 2nd, do you have shell access?

Distill Web Monitor Chrome extension. No sign-up necessary. Click on the icon twice. 1st time will take to sign-up page. 2nd time will bring up the app.

LOL I've been off of newsgroups since like 2010. I know how to use them just fine mister pirate. Not sure wtf that has to do with you being super lazy. I'm sure someone held your hand to get you on them too.

Actually you have no idea that comment proves it.

That is fine but I bet you have no clue how to use newsgroups.

I don't know why anyone would brag about knowing how to use newsgroups. I always thought it was odd people paid for access to content that's usually released first on IRC.

Not that knowing how to pirate should be point of pride, anyway. I'll admit I did it back in the day before services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Amazon Kindle, Spotify, Steam, GOG, etc provided legitimate ways to get movies, TV shows, ebooks, music, and games on the internet.

Well because most people nowadays have no idea how to use it.

Stuff was never released first on IRC. It's released first to top sites (FTP sites) and trickles down from there. It usually was on newsgroups within like 15-20 minutes of it pre'ing on top sites, quicker than that as they became more popular. Getting stuff on IRC with xdcc bots and what not was way below newgroups as far as getting stuff quick and as soon as it was available.

I remember my pirate days...

EDIT: back on topic: there are a bunch of uptime monitors that will send you alerts, but not all in real time

I was going to mention FTP sites, but those are private servers more than a "release" by a group. Not that it really matters.
That's not how it works. Groups would "pre" releases on those FTP sites which is how they are "released" and as I said they trickle down from there.

Releases would be finished and uploaded to sites (sometimes days before they released them) but they wouldn't be public on those sites until the groups pre them, which basically means they are released and public now and can be distributed by people on the sites.

The sites these groups actually release things on are known as top sites.

I stand corrected. I thought (semantically) that only general availability counted as the release and not the internal and private access on topsites, but thinking about it it's a "release" from the first, primary upload (assuming it isn't nuked at some point).
