Best way to deter spiders

Red Squirrel

No Lifer
I am in process of buying a house and in the inspection I noticed there are a lot of spiders in that house. I'm not really afraid of them, but still want to do something (I am actually afraid of cob webs, can't explain that, some weird phobia of mine). Anyhow, I just want to know what are options for helping get rid of them.

Here's what I'm thinking:

1: get it infumigated once a year by a pest control

2: Clean and paint basement/crawlspace (brick foundation, split level house)

3: There is a mini crawlspace under the garage which is accessible from the main crawlspace, so I will add heat to there (inspector told me I should do that to prevent frost, but maybe it can help dether spiders as well)

4: Install a venmar/dehumidifier system (or maybe just get one of those portable ones?)

I think these things alone will help a lot, but what are other things I can do. Perhaps something to the same extent as moth balls but safe for pets. I probably wont let my cat in the basement, but I still want it to be safe for her or any other future pet if ever I do.

I've also heard boric acid but I don't think that would be very safe around pets. Anything with a strong toxic odor probably wont be safe either. I'm looking more for a natural solution that is safe for animals.

Oh, and obligatory pics:

dungeon!

The "dungeon" part is what I want to do something about the most. I'll be taking a broom to clean out all those webs, then vacuum out all the dust and missed webs then paint in there, as a start. I'll most likely run a duct in there. They got this huge electric heater in there which is probably half the hydro bill. At least my garage will be warm if I leave that heater there lol.

set the house on fire

Based on my research a few people HAVE done this. The insurance goes up though, and it might be harmful to pets. 😛

My main concern is my cat eating a spider. I know she would have enjoyed the one in the bath. Hours of fun followed by supper, then an emergency trip to the vet.

your cat is a pussy. anyway, if it eats a spider, its like a darwin award, and we like awards here.

Damn canadians and your made up words. "Dether"?? "Hydro bill" ???

Don't forget "infumigated"

If it's that bad you may want to fumigate before moving in.

Ok so I miss spelled deter, but what is wrong with hydro bill? You know, the bill you pay each month for electricity? And fumigate is when you fill the house with fumes to get rid of bugs. The exterminator does this. It's quite common to get that done here as the winter tends to push the bugs indoors. In my case I hardly have any bugs because the spiders eat them all LOL.

Hydro sounds weird to an American but at least makes sense.

And the word fumigate is fine...infumigate is not.

To an American, "hydro" would imply something related to water, and "hydro bill" would have no known meaning, so my initial guess was "water bill". I'm honestly curious where the term would come from. I didn't think hydroelectric dams were that common in America's Hat, maybe I'm mistaken?

Anyway, the obvious solution to your problem is to assume a stance of dominance.
