Best Way To Defrag?

I am somewhere around 86% fragmented, its really bad. To totally defrag my hard drive, it takes LITERALLY 5 days at a time. I've had norton speed disk run for 7 hours every night for the past week, but it has little effect. Is there any program that I can run that will actually make a difference, without putting my computer out of use for 5 days straight?

Yikes! 86%

I defrag every time I install a new program or move some large files. It doesn't take that long if you defrag a little bit every week and can save you time and headaches in the long run.

I don't know that any defrag program is significantly faster than another.

I'd recommend formating your drive and starting over if there's no critical data on your disk.

More tips for avoiding fragmentation:

1) Partion your hard disk - make a data partition for downloads and stuff that you move around alot. Keep the OS separate, and perhaps the programs as well. My standard setup is:

2-4 GB for OS
2-4 GB for Programs
Remainder for Data Partitions

This seems to work well for me.

that's certainly too long.
how big is your hdd & is it running in compatibility mode??

I would seriously just wipe the hard drive clean and start new, it's not worth waiting all that time to have it defrag. If it takes more time fixing a problem that it would to format the hard drive then it's not worth it. Just wipe it out.

is the drive almost full? U should have around 25% of the disk free for a defrag... if there is not 25% free then make this much free.

then download the 30day trial version of diskeeper7 and have at it... depends on the size of the drive, but a badly fragmented 40GB drive should only take about 4 hours or so (assuming 25% free space available)

oldfart: I have one 57 gig partition
sean2002, stingbandel: I have tried diskkeeper, and found it to be nothing special... I have also tried perfectdisk. Again nothing special. I have 11% space free.

1 . Toggle F8 or press Ctrl key during bootup ( depends on your computor ) , choose Command prompt
only ( NOT Safe mode Command prompt ), then at the C: prompt , type Scandisk /all & press Enter .
When finished , type win & press Enter .

2 . Run defrag in Safe mode 1st , then download ME defrag .

Toggle F8 or press Ctrl key during bootup , choose
safe-mode .

----------------------------------

Windows ME defrag ( free ) , very fast . I don't need to close
( ctrl/alt/delete ) anything down to run defrag , no restarts .
Get it from here .

================================

Open Windows Explorer , go down to Windows , left click on the yellow
folder , this opens the right hand panel .
Scroll down to defrag & write down the exact name . Next , right
click on defrag , scroll down to rename & click on it . Now left
click at the end of defrag & add the word old . So if you had the
word defrag , it now becomes defragold .
Now rename MEdefrag to whatever you wrote down , drag & drop it on
the yellow Windows folder or anywhere in the right hand side .
Both achive the same thing & Windows will after you close , put it
alphabetically . That's it .

=================================

Also , to make ME Defrag even Faster for it's 1st run , from
Windows Explorer , Delete all the files ( except the read only file )
in Windows > Applog . Taskmon will rebuild the Applog file .

To view Applog , do this .
Windows Explorer > View > Folder Options > View , click on Show all files . Click OK .

That is a lot of data to move around. Just setup the defragger to run in the background, the issue will resolve itself over the next week or two. At that point the defragger will have very little to do in the background so keeping upto data should be fairly quick.

That 11% free is the problem. That and the one big partition. This is one of the reasons its better to have multiple partitions. Makes defrag much more manageable. What I would do is free up some space. Delete what you can, move it to CDR, other drive, whatever, then do a defrag.

Thats over 5 gig free. Plenty of space. And thats not a large volume, I just finished formatting my 380gig volume 😉 I just think he's expecting 'instant' gratificaiton like when drives where 100meg. Today ideally defrag just runs at a very low priority constantly. Once you setup that way, you keep things in good shape from then on.

Everybody is telling me different things. I think that FAQ guy should do some research, and then add a question to the list explaining defragmentation.

Look on the bright side ...14% of your drive isn't fragmented!

What OS are you running? What file system are you using NTFS or FAT>?

I think YOU should do your own damn research. There have been MANY great suggestions, yet you have done nothing. Get off your lazy ass and defrag your hard drive.

Listen tool, I have. I already stated I've tried different things, different programs, etc. I am greatful for the responses so far, but I believe this is an issue which deserves a place in the FAQs.

"I have tried diskkeeper, and found it to be nothing special... I have also tried perfectdisk. Again nothing special. "

Well, if you've gone through multiple programs, and they've all yielded the same results, try deducing that your defragmented drive won't be magically defragmented by ANY program in a matter of a few hours.

ok... stop the argument.

Alastor: you are here to find a solution for your hdd, so be patient ok.

I did a little research for you. Try this O&O defrag utility. I just downloaded it and defrag my system. It takes a while to defrag my 10 gig (5 gig used).

I don't guarantee it will solve your problem but I hope it could. I think it's hard to do it in one day. You should do it in 3 or 4 days regularly (at least once a day).

Please PM me if you find it useful or not useful so I know.

I think Norton is the best, but a couple of things I have found to help (a little, at least). First of all, an aborted defrag is ususally worse than what you originally started with. Once you start, you should let it run its course, even if that takes a day for you. Second, i would check the options to make sure full optimization is not checked. You should probably first try plain unfrag of files and then space, and then go for full optimization.

Lastly, i found Norton usually runs and defrags fastest when fragmentation is below 5%-7%, after that, it starts getting VERY slow..

Hope that helps 🙂

Just a question here...I have never seen a disk at this level of fragmentation. I have worked on Pc's / networks for 5 years now...that has got to be record. How did you manage to get it that way? Editing video?

Reread my posts. I wrote part of Speeddisk so I know what I'm talking about in this area (no promises I know what I'm talking about in other areas tho! 🙂)
