Best way to contact district Congressman??

z1ggy

Lifer
I wanted to contact my Congressman to express to him an idea I have regarding guns, gun control, etc. I went to his website and basically there is some boxes to put in your name, info etc and then a text box, where you input whatever it is you want to say.

I feel like this would not be a very effective method of getting my point accross to him as I doubt he actually has time to read all the stuff he gets from there. Is there a better way to get a hold of him? A phone call would be nice, but I don't really expect to get a hold of a Congressman via phone. I feel like my idea is important and a good one and I really want to share it with him, and get some feed back.

What do you guys suggest?

Calls are better, but also do the e-mail as well. Yea a staffer will take the phone call but they usually take phone calls more serious. Takes more energy to make a phone call so they get more e-mails than phone calls.

Make sure to point out that you are registered in their district and vote in elections.

You could always try kidnapping him as well.

If you're feeling punchy you could float it in P&N. I doubt it's anything that hasn't been considered before but maybe you'll surprise me.

The only people who are going to hear/read your idea is an Intern, a Staff Assistant, and the Legislative Correspondent. In the end you will likely get a form letter from the later.

I worked in a Congressional office. The wackos sure do come out of the woodwork.

Email the office and ask to set up a time for someone to call you. They will email you back to set up a phone call with a staffer. The staffer will screen you to find out if you're a nutjob. Since you obviously are, you will probably get the brush off. If you do manage to convince them that you aren't, then maybe you can get an appointment when your rep is back in town.

And just so you know - your congressman does not care in the least about what your opinions are. They only care about making it look like they listen to their constituents. When the get back to DC, they will vote depending on how they are getting greased by corporate or union donors .

The average person will never get an appointment with their Congressman to discuss an idea for legislation.

My mother is a complete whacko and still managed to get some phone time with one of our congressmen.

ahhhhh this thread is taking a turn for the funny. Almost makes it seem like I shouldn't even bother.

And to address the person who wanted to know my idea...simple put as follows:

No bans on any guns such as ARs. In my view, guns aren't the problem, it's irresponsible people. I believe gun owners need to be held responsible for the previledge that they were granted to purchase and own a firearm. All fire arms should be locked when not in your direct control. Period. Sandy Hook very likely could have been avoided all together, if the mother had her guns completely locked up and out of her kid's hands. This last shooting at the school in CA.. Same thing... The brother did not have his shotgun locked up, at least from what I read so far.

I believe we need to impose massive fines and/or jail time for people who can't control their fire arms. Unless you are carrying it on your person, at the range, etc, it should be locked up in some way. If it's not, and it's used like it was in the CA shooting, that person should be charged as an accomplice. He may as well have handed it right over to him, the result was the same.

I think if people are aware that severe penalty will be a result of them not locking the firearm away safely, that they will be more likely to do so, resulting in less theft and misuse of firearms by the wrong people.

Okay, I'll be serious. Write a letter. Not an email, not a phone call but a physical paper and ink letter. Congress critters have a near 100% response rate for letters, not so for email or phone calls. Also, check for "Meet your Congress Critter" events on your Rep's webpage and go meet them. House Members are generally much easier to get face time with than Senators.

That form serves the purpose of weeding out every crackpot who feels like his idea is the greatest ever and he deserves one on one time with The Man. If you really want to reach him you'll probably have to wait for him in the bushes outside of his house.

On a serious note, you can always call his office and speak to the flunkies. Maybe you'll get a little further with them than the form. That's what I do and it works, although I am calling in a professional capacity not as a crackpot.

Reported to FBI for domestic terrorism. Also, kidnapping is a federal crime.

You need to organize a drive by shooting at his office, show up a couple days later with your idea. If the crime affects them, they're more likely to do something about it. 😉
