Best way to connect an Xbox and a Projector?

I have Halo running through the composite video right now. Will it make a difference if I get a better cable for the XBOX's video out? (S-video, Component, VGA)

Is there anyway to do HD resolutions with halo? (Projector = Infocus LP130)

(I want to have every advantage in a 4 vs 4 CTF match)

A projector would seem like you'd lose or wash out a lot of the detail. Worst is you buy it and try it - if no, return it

well I'm kind of borrowing it right now... I'm trying to make the picture look better.

Its shining on a white wall in a dark room right now, pretty big; about a 35" television for each of us in Halo (1/4 of the screen area). It look really nice, but the low resolution is very obvious on such a large screen.

Didn't know that - if that's the case then get the Hi-def kit. I know it's not nearly the same thing but the diff is night and day on his 65" WS HDTV

The highest resolution Halo can do is 480P, and you will need the High definition video cable for the xbox to get component outputs. Then you will have to get an adapter to convert the the conponent video into a VGA connection that can plug into the projector. This is what I'm doing to connect my Xbox to my infocus X1 projector. I made the adapter to convert the component video to VGA, but you can buy one for something like $20 from infocus.

Since Halo isn't capable of going higher than 480P, you will not see a huge improvement by doing all this. You will get a better picture, but I doubt it's going to blow you away. Put in a 720P game like Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4, and you will see the difference.

Griffin said it pretty well, although it's up to you (and your projector) as to whether or not you need to convert the signal over to a VGA input. You'll notice a difference, but it'll just make things look "smoother" more than anything else. A big reason why the X1 has been so popular is the de-interlacer that's built in, which will also make a huge difference in the PQ.

I actually looked at the inputs on his projector, and he doesn't seem to have component inputs, so he will have to convert to VGA. I did forget about the fact that he probably doesn't have the good de-interlacer that's built into the X1, so the improvement from going with the VGA connection over the composite might be pretty impressive.

I also have a projector (Epson 7700P), and I have a few questions related to this subject:

1. I see a lot of 3rd party products on eBay that claim to be equivalent of the official Microsoft Xbox version... would I see any different if I bought one of these?
2. My projector supports "hi-def" video, but it is in the form of BNC connectors instead of RCA plugs. Is there a cable that converts from RCA to BNC? Or will I need to buy 5 RCA->BNC adapters?

Thanks!

Griffin, could you tell me exactly what sort of cables you'd buy to connect the Xbox Hi Def Pack to your projector? Thanks.

johnny...you can get a cable terminated any way you want, but people will here will start blabbing about 75-ohm adherence and whatnot...I would say to buy a normal cable and just get adapters, as that cable will be much more useful in the future. As for your first question, as long as they use a good cable, I'm sure it'd be just as good as the "official" one.

Composite video is only capable of carrying ~300 lines of resolution. S-Video is capable of ~400 lines, and component video can do high definition 1080 lines of resolution so you will increase from around 300 lines to a 480 progressive signal by going to component video. Roughly a 50% improvement in picture quality based on resolution alone. Factor in the enhanced color saturation that component video cables can carry and you're looking at a much improved picture.

Component to VESA adapter

or... if you handy with the soldering iron, you can try this. You can even skip buying the VGA cable if you wan to try using the CAT5 cable to run from the xbox to the projector. You should be able to do this for less than $10, but since I haven't actually done it, I can't vouch for the quality of the image you will get. I made a short adapter (10" long) using the connector for radio shack and the ends of a standard RCA cable that I wasn't using. It seems to work fine for the Xbox and HDTV from the cable box.

One of these VGA cables to run from the xbox to the projector.

I bought the 35' cable from this store, and it works fine.
