Im planning on using a tablet to take photos in several offices that i want stored on a server so i can access them from any other office. I am thinking of using the dell venue 8 pro which is windows 8.1 based. The tablets would only be used for taking the photos and viewing the photos. I want to make this as easy as possible on the person taking the photo so was hoping to have the photos automatically uploaded or backup ed to a specific location on the server. Briefly searching, there is a function within windows to do this and i was wondering if this is the best way to do it using the windows file history backup function which id set to every hour.

I am not planning on spending time naming the files but will search for them based on date taken when needing to locate the file. I just dont want to invest manpower in naming the files and am concerned about them being deleted accidentally.

Does this sound like a good plan or is there a better way to do it or any particular software that would work better?

There is an option to automatically backup the photos to Skydrive in Windows 8.1.

Are you tied to Windows 8.1? There's Dropbox for Android devices that will automatically copy your pics over. There's Photo Stream on iOS devices that will automatically copy the photos to a computer of your choice.

There's a ton of ways to do what you want though.

thanks a lot for the post. Im not tied to windows per say. Im thinking of avoiding iOS devices bc of cost since there would be about a dozen offices. I also am concerned that iPads would walk out of the offices where this device would be less likely or if it did that it would be cheaper to replace.

The photos involved are of patients in a medical setting so im not sure i want to use skydrive out of security concerns. I also want to limit the tablets ability to the server to just the folder(s) with photos.

Do you need separation for every office? Say, one office's files not mixing with another ones?

Is the server on site or is it in a remote location that every office needs to communicate with?

Not necessarily although I was concerned they would accidentally have the same name.

I guess id need a way to automatically create different names so instead of photo001.jpg that it says office1photo 001.jpg.p

No sure why you'd have concerns with SkyDrive, I've used it for a couple years now with kind of the same need. Multiple locations, uploading and syncing without duplication of names.

If Skydrive doesn't work try Allwaysync.

Yeah... thats the sort of thing you don't want to upload to a cloud service.

On Android I'd just use a client app to upload to an FTP server, theres bound to be a WP8 app to do that I'd think.

I use Picasa 3.9 to auto backup on my Windows 8.1 Pro Laptop and Android tablet. I installed the desktop version since I don't have or want touch on the laptop. The Store only has something called Picasa HD and is a different app sadly. Just saw your in the medical field and the cloud won't work for you.

cant full windows tablet join a domain? You could possibly make some sort of domain policy for this. I havent used a tablet in a business environment like this, so I am not sure if it is possible.

Are you in the US? I imagine you will need to make sure whatever you use complies with HIPAA
