<< I'm thinking of getting grisoft's AVG. I'm just concerned as to how this program is free. Are there are any ads associated with the program. I just don't understand how they can support itself. >>

No ads with AVG, it`s only free to some countries,it`s not free for European countries except UK,they also do other anti-virus programs that you pay for like AVG Professional editon which offers more ,so you see Grisoft cover both free and paid anti-virus programs.

CA Vet AntiVirus and Eset NOD32 are the top of the list on http://www.virusbtn.com/100/vb100sum.html. Both of them are Australian products too :)

The top four are;
* Vet
* NOD32
* Norman Virus Control
* Norton AntiVirus

All of these are very good products, I have used NOD32, Vet and Norton AntiVirus and they all are very good apps. I found the email proxy scanner in NOD32 to be better than Norton's, Norton AV tended to stop working (thus killing ability to download emails) at various times.

AVG actually picked up on a virus in my dad's email that Norton had not. Both had been up to date also. AVG is great because it is not a resource hog like Norton.

I've been using F-secure AV for a several years now. It's always given me complete protection and I d/l files off the internet all the time. I remember reading a report about a year ago that tested all the major AV programs and F-secure beat them all including Norton. Out of something like 136 viruses F-secure did not get infected even once while Norton, the next best, was infected twice. Panda was also one of the best. Unfortunately, I don't have a link to that report or I would post it.

Greatest thing about F-secure besides it's ironclad protection is free virus definition updates forever. :)

I vote for NAV 2002..it works great and if picks up a virus it can quarantine it and prevent the infection...it has saved me several times recently..updating is a snap....

Your system will be fine. Duron 700 with 512 RAM. Don't sweat it. Pick up a copy of NAV 2002. You'll like it. It's great!
