I currently have a 4K IPS 60hz monitor. Desktop contains a core i7 3770 (non K) with 16gb DDR3 RAM. I am looking to replace my GT 1030 with the most powerful videocard for my current CPU. I want to play GTA V and Wolfenstein at 4k. Looking at a used GTX 1070 Ti or a new GTX 1660 Ti. Would a GTX 1080 Ti be a waste? I am guessing it would be so that is why I am debating between the 1070 ti and 1660 ti. Thank you for reading.

In 4K you are GPU bound. So effectively, no GPU, outside of RTX 2080 Ti mayb not be a waste for your CPU. GTX 1080 TI still can be a viable option for your CPU and your resolution.

Even such an old CPU is good enough for 60+ fps in most current games, so at 4K you will be limited by your graphics card. The first GPU considered good enough for 60fps@4K is the 1080Ti, so you should be aiming for that or above. The only cards I would consider are 1080Ti, 2080, 2080Ti, Radeon VII.

Thank you for the replies! It feels weird but also badass to place a 1080 Ti with this old computer. Going to lurk on eBay and see what I can find.

The 1070ti i own does ok at 4k, i keep the demanding stuff low or off and put grass on high and i only dip into the 50s in the grassy hills in GTA V. Can do BF1 with ambient occlusion off, effects on low with lighting the same and pull a 60+ fps rate.

Can play some Overwatch all maxed out and pull over 60+ constant and its been my main game so meh the 1070ti works for me. Gonna wait for something to replace the 2080ti before i upgrade. Been years since i did a effective 100% upgrade. I think 8800gts 512mb to gtx280?

Edit: i still voted 1080ti cause if you can afford it i say go for it.

What is your PSU? I agree with above posters though, at 4k you want the best you can get. Just make sure your PSU can handle it.

You can always run the game at 1440P and upscale it. The is a slight quality degradation, but it allows for higher quality video settings and much better FPS. This is what nVidia's DLSS does, only it doesn't look as good as straight upscaling.

I paired my i7 3770 with a 6 GB GeForce 1060, and it plays 1440p games at high details without issue.

I'm already hitting CPU bottlenecks in certain games at that resolution, though, so I'm not sure that you're going to fare well using that CPU and video card setup at 4K.

The stock 3770 will struggle to maintain 60 FPS in GTAV, especially if you are (I'm assuming) running slower than DDR3 1600 RAM. I just booted up GTA V on a 3770k @ 4.5 GHz and it will not keep my GPU @ 100% load and frames will drop to 50 during heavy action sequences. So you will get some bottlenecking with any card, but should still be quite playable. GTAV does offer a lot of graphic tweaking, so how well a card handles 4k depends on what settings you absolutely want to use - there are settings that affect both CPU and GPU performance. Wolfenstein should be alright with your CPU. Whether or not your CPU will bottleneck really varies from one game to the next, and just how much graphical tweaking the game allows and how much tweaking you want to do. There isn't a clear-cut answer to your question. But I think the used 1070 Ti would probably offer the best bang for your buck (similar price to a new 1660 Ti but better performance) and I wouldn't bother with a 1080 Ti unless you plan to upgrade the CPU.
