Best video PCI-E under $150? X850XT?

Seems like a nice deal to me, 256MB and 16-pipes w/ 256-bit interface for only like $125 shipped. This should run everything out there great as well, even at some of the higher resolutions.

Thanks for the reply, your comments are in-line with what I thought as well. My only other possible issue is putting this into a SFF case (Ultra Microfly), and heat generation versus other cards in the price range.

This card runs fairly hot and is very noisy when ramped up. I'm not sure it would be a great canidate for a SFF.

you need a gaming card in an sff? That's what this is, a gaming card. Durring it's generation it was a $400+ beast. It still beats the 7800 series in many games. It's been the best performance/dollar card for about the last 3 or 4 months, ever since it dropped under $160. It can get fairly hot, but if you re-mount the stock heatsink w/ as5 you should lose a few degrees.

You think re-mounting the stock fan/heatsink with Arctic Silver 5 compound will make a difference? I may take a chance on the card, the Microfly is a bit bigger and seems to run things somewhat cooler than many other SFFs.

I haven't gone with nVidia since the GeForce2 series, but for under $150, there are some 7600GTs out there that seem like a good deal. Look for them on the egg... You'll probably get better performance with less heat when you read the reviews for the x850s.

7600gt is pretty cheap. there are a bunch after rebate on newegg under $150 (some even before rebate).

some after rebate are like $113.

it depends on what game you play actually. in oblivion ATI cards tend to win, but the 7600gt is faster in some of the other games on toms hardware charts.

$119 for a x850xt is pretty cheap though. has a dual slot cooler compared to a 7600gt or a newer card, so may be noisier and definitely more power useage.

For SFF I would tread carefully, those often have space, heat, and power issues.

This thread also really belongs in the video section, not hot deals.

I would lean toward a 7600GT because of updated technology (90nm process, SM3, dual DVI, etc) and less power draw/heat production. In addition, many 7600GTs are factory OC'd (mine is at 600/1560 currently) and with that extra clock speed it would likely be able to rival and beat even a X850XT PE. One of my friends has a X800GTO^2 unlocked and OC'd to X850XT PE levels (similar setup to mine, 2.5GHz A64 S939 CPU and 1GB PC3200). I get notably higher FPS in every game that we have compared (NFS, CSS, HL2, etc-5-10 FPS difference), so I think my GFX card has to play some role in that.

However I think the lower heat production and power draw of the nVidia card would make them better for SFF, not just the performance.

Any suggestions for AGP? Thinking about going with the X850 Pro from Newegg, just wondering if there's a better price/performance card out there.

For ANY X850 you really ought to buy an Arctic Cooler Silencer 5 Rev. 2, they can be had for ~$25 shipped from svc.com. They make this card REALLY quiet, and keep them a LOT cooler. I can overclock quite a bit higher than with stock.

The X850 PRO AGP is an excellent card still. I have one and love it. With the silencer, I can run it at 590/1180 (up from 500/1000 stock) and it really runs everything I play very nicely.
For AGP, anything better is way more expensive.

I will say that you will not run modern games (FEAR etc) at 1600x1200 with very high frame rates, but at, say, 1280x1024 the X850 PRO and XT work awesome.

Reviews don't agree that the 7600gt is a better card. The shader 3 thing really has no bearing since games that will use it will require more power than the 7600gt. Anyway I got the Sapphire x850xt for $99 after a rebate....Sweet

I have the x850xt also which I got for $99. I looked at reviews before buying it and found it better than the 7600gt.

I picked up the X850XT PE from the egg and upgraded from a 9800 pro its like night and day. good value for the $

Upgraded recently to an X850XT PCI-e for $99, that was a sweet deal. 1440x900, mostly maxed out in just about everything I throw at my computer. Looks a lot better than 1024x768.

Just noticed newegg has a X850XT agp for 175, I wonder if it's worth the difference over a X850pro (Toms lists doesn't have the pro)
