If you don't choose a game that is best by choosing the one you enjoy most, how do you choose? Whatever Gamespot rates the best?

Whatever you think other people should/do/did enjoy the most?

OP updated.

indeed... and what the hell makes Deus Ex the best game ever?

It has an awesome storyline, it's relatively non-linear for a FPS, it's the most replayable game ever, the graphics pwn, the voice acting pwns, and Toby Atanwe is the coolest man ever.

I don't find DE the best game ever, and the graphics haven't aged well, but it had a really good plot, the cybernetic upgrades were kind of cool, and the physical representation of the character was kind of cool. I.E. you only had a limited amount of inventory space to carry items and you could injure individual pieces of your body, so if you damaged your legs enough, you would be reduced to crawling on the ground.

You can see the quality in a game without necessarily enjoying it yourself. The same could be said of any entertainment or art form.

As to the question at hand, I'm still thinking about it. The two games I've likely put the most hours into would be Diablo II and Unreal Tournament (1st one). But my favorite might be something else like Super Metroid, Super Mario, Zelda OoT, Zelda LttP, Twisted Metal 2... too many to list... I have to ponder this a while.

mario 3.

best selling video game not to come with a console even today. (and has sold almost 2x was FF7 has)

When you make the poll make sure it is in alphabetical order.

The assignment is going to be relatively random, based on some scrambling by my part and mainly the order in which nominations are recieved, more or less.

and yet, it's difficult to say that it's the best game ever.

Not at all. Within just minutes of playing Deus Ex for the first time I knew that it was the best, and I was a complete Marathon 2: Durandal fanboy before that.

Rush'n Attack
Metal Gear
Zelda
Command & Conquer
Metroid
Super Mario Bros
Dreadnaught Factor
Utopia
B-17 Bomber
Burger Time

I feel ashamed, as should everyone else, that Castlevania: Symphony of the Night has not yet been mentioned. A classic if there ever was one. The Dawn of Sorrow topic reminded me of this game.
