for under $150.

I have a PCi-Express P5KPL-VM mainboard.

I'm looking at the following cards (I currently have an 8600 gt):

(1) EVGA e-GeForce 9600GT 512MB PCI-Express Video Card (this one's $100).

(2) BFG GeForce 8800 GT 512MB PCIe Video Card (this one's $100).

(3) EVGA GeForce 9800GTX+ 512MB PCI-E Video Card (this one's $170).

Thanks in advance.

The 8800GT sames it's obviously within your budget. Otherwise, the 9800GT (the re-hashed die-shrunk 8800GT) Of course you might be able to fine a 4850 for $150 at some places.

Staying on budget, I would reccomend the 8800GT. The 9800 is obviously the best choice.

I am severely disappointed with the extreme lack of civil behavior on the forums lately. I had thought that after months of being away that the fighting and snide/rude comments would have gone away. I see I was wrong.

Regardless of the mainboard not being SLI compatible and perhaps SnakeA didn't know of this and did not look up what board that was specifically, it was not called for to make an off topic comment like you did and attempt to humiliate him in a public forum. It is especially bad when he is a new member with only 1 post on his first day of membership. What kind of example are you showing to new members by your post?

You didn't offer anything useful to the topic at hand. What SnakeA said was right anyway. out of the choices the 9800GTX is the better of the 3. I would recommend a look at the new ATI 4850 because it offers a tremendous value.

P.S. If any mods read this can we please try to keep civility and professionalism on the forums. I understand it's not easy and you cannot check every thread and every post. It still bothers me.

While I agree with the two above posters about the 4850, I was going only within your specs. The 4850 is a sweet card though and worth the money.

So, given just my opinion on any card for a "cheaper" system, in order:
4850
9800
8800
9600

But if you are looking to stay under 150 NO MATTER WHAT, than I would say the 8800 is a really good bet.

Thank you all. Don't worry about the a**-ish comment on hsi part--his snide remarks are meaningless to me.

ATI Radeon HD4850 512MB PCI-E Video Card for $180.00 (CAD). Worth it? Over the other choices I pointed out?

According to this http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3341

The 9800GTX+ and HD4850 are pretty close generally speaking. It goes back and forth depending on the game you're looking at in the benchmarks.

I suppose it would depend on what you play. For instance, the 9800GTX+ is better in crysis, assasin's creed, the witcher, and oblivion. The HD4850 is faster in Bioshock, ET: Quake Wars, and CoD4. The difference between them can be large at times when playing at 1920x1080.

At the price point your looking at, and if only because of the argueable difference. It depends on the vendor. Really, I would purchase an XFX card, EVGA, or BFG card over any other maker. If you want to go with the 4850, I would go Visiontek. This is only because of the warrenty on the cards.

I would say that you should go with the 4850. I loved that card when I was using it, shame I had system config issues that made me turn the card in. Just remember, the 4850 is a single slots, and gets HOT w/o the fan fix, which is easy now that the 3rd party programs are adding fan speed into them.

Newegg has the ASUS 9800GTX+ available for $169.00 (after $30 rebate, which usually takes ~9 months)

I would skip one pizza this week and let that budget grow 20 bucks.

unless your case absolutely fails at airflow, it really isn't a problem at about 50% fan speed.

get the 4850.

Went with the 9800 GTX+ simply because it was roughly $30 cheaper than the 4850. I got a super special because I also bought a HSF and a USB HS+M.

Not a bad choice. Enjoy
