Not sure on availability in your area, but Geforce 6800GT seems to be the sweet spot for cost and performance, and even overclockability. Costs 399$ i think.

Nice, is it better than this one?

(I found that one from a link on the HotDeals page via the AnandTech mod)

Although i have been a fan for ATI graphics cards, right now, Nvidea has the lead. You cant really go wrong with any of the cards in this price range though.

I would go with teh 6800GT this ruond due to its price.

Bestbuy has them, www.newegg.com might have then in stock.

the X800 and 6800ULTRA will probably be a *little* faster than the 6800GT, but not worth the price jump IMO. You should just keep an eye in hot deals, pretty much any decent prices for the card will show up in there

your bf is one lucky guy, if my gf knew what a video card was, i'd be good to go...

I am on the same boat. My g/f tried reinstalling windows xp (she wanted to impress me)....she ended up installing Windows on the same partition on different dirctory. Sadly, the files for Windows are being shared by both....so you never know which Windows to go in when the computer asks... She also ended up trying to install wondows in a different partition (she just randomly picked options), and now she has a partition on her harddrive that has half of teh windows files.....

get an NVIDIA 6800GT card.. no preference on brand necessary. whatever has a good deal/warranty.

no point in spending the extra $ for an Ultra card.

these cards can be found at most places online... you can call any local shop and ask them as well. If 1 place cant get it, likely the next place can.

eff that, she doesn't know what a operating system is. hell, i installed xp on their home 500mhz HP and upped the ram because it had windows 98. whenever it doesn't sign online her dad says "this computer dont ever work, derrick stole the parts out of it and put it in his to make it faster" lmfao, dude trips me out, he still plays Top Gun from like 95 on that rig and thinks he is the cats meow. i let him play bf1942 coral sea one time, he said you get me in a plane then i will fly it. for like 3 hours we switched seats, i would spawn after he died, find plane, he'd take over, rinse and repeat.

Picking your gifts is nice, but there's no element of surprise that way. :)

ahhh, so true, two for the price of one;)

Yep. I might lose a few dozen rungs on the nerd ladder for this, but of the following options:

1) 6800GT

2) My fiancee in a different lingerie ensemble every night for a week

I'd choose #2 in a rapidly increasing heartbeat. :D

You should save your money. The other thread about Lakers tickets you said you have like $1600 saved up and you want to drop $500 on tickets and/or $500 on a vid card? I guess the "you gotta have this" advertisments have gotten to you to. spend, spend, spend, buy, buy, buy!!

In case you haven't noticed I think you should go for a lesser vid card (if anything) and try to save some money. You're what, like 25 years old by now, time to grow up and look to the future, not into self-gratification and the present.

Why? It's not like it's Everquest or something? :D

As many other people have pointed out, any 6800GT for around $399 or as cheap as you can get it. Or if he's not as hardcore save yourself about $220 ( for the wedding! :p )and just get a 9800Pro. You can still play Doom 3 with it at decent settings.

He'll be 23 and I turned 24 earlier this month, and thanks for the kind/wise words Staley. I figure this will be my last big purchase for a long, long time - and the money spent on the video card will take the place of those that would have been spent on Lakers tix. Right now it looks like I'll be looking for a good deal on the 6800GT video card, which hopefully can be found for $300-350 or so. Next step, Roth IRA.
