best video card for high-res LCD/3D gaming?

what would the best video card be for image quality on a high-res (1280x1024) LCD, and being able to play most 3D games smoothly at this resolution?

As far as I can tell, you want to be able to use DVI.

Since you want great image quality, I would then conclude that the Radeon 8500 with a DVI would be the best choice. If you just wanted performance, any Geforce3 with DVI would probably work too.

Leadtek, Gainward, or Hercules GF3. I have the Leadtek and Gainward and both perform great at 1280x1024 on my LCD panels.

Get a GF3 with a DVI connector.

The 2D quality problem on nVidia cards is in the DAC circuitry (specifically the RFI filters if I recall correctly) by using a DVI connector you bypass the problem completely.

Alternatively you could get a GF2 family card with a DVI they are not quite as fast at 1280x1024, but probably fast enough for current games, a lot cheaper. But I assume since you have a nice big LCD you have some $$$ to spare.
