I still see the 4890 as a great deal, if DX11 adoption is not a priority for you.

I agree, if I would have gotten a 5770 DX11 card 6 months ago I still wouldn't be swayed by features versus the performance decrease.
I'd buy now based on three things which may or may not apply to the OP. Pure performance being first in THE price range, heat/power consumption second, and DX11 third. If I had to add a fourth factor probably PhysX.
I think even today I'd try for a 4890 or a GTX275 before settling with a 5770. Yes the 5770 overclocks well, but so do the other cards making that a moot point.
It all depends on what the OP'S priorities are.

The problem with the 5830 at that price is that it's still 33% more money than a 5770 for about 10-15% more performance.

Actually, I'm seeing it as more like 48% more money for the 5830 over the 5770 1GB. The low price for the 5830 is around $200, and the 5770 1GB frequently dips down to the $135 range.

OP, if you really want to spend $200, then I recommend saving up a bit more for a 5850. Otherwise the 5770 1GB and 4890 are the two best options under $200.

Yeah there isnt anything compelling at the $200 price point. You can get a 5850 for $255 after BCB.

I'm looking to upgrade (currently have a 7600GT after my 8800GTX burned out)... I can spend about $200.00 on a card... what would be the best bet?

Or, if you happen across this post and you have a good Heat record and are selling a good card for around 200, please PM me

As we both know I am going to own you in Reach, save your pennies now and put it toward a 5850 you loser ;)

Btw, something with a warranty would be good. If you buy used make sure you consider that in your cost. Just because a 4890 used outperforms ABC doesn't mean it is worth more. Featureset, Power, Heat, and Warranty seriously diminish the value.

Yeah, that's definitely something to consider. Heat, power, and warranty would be reasons to lean toward a 5770 1GB even though it's slower that a 4890. However, when comparing a $130 used 4890 that outperforms a $200 5830, I think there's no contest between them.

When buying used, you might want to look for an XFX card with a double lifetime warranty. This means that both the original buyer and the second-hand buyer get a lifetime warranty as long as you register it when you buy the card.

Careful - it is true that in most reviews at the time 5830 lunched that was true, but since then there have been updates to drivers that increased performance. Recent reviews put the 5830 right at the 465 and in the few tests that also show up GTX 285, GTX 275 and 4890, the 5830 generally outperforms/ is on par with those.

imma ask this question here:

how badly bottlenecked would current gen graphics cards be if your system has pci express x16 and you're running an opteron on an AMD S939 socket? would these $200 solutions be viable? or do I need a new cpu? im guessing 939 is dead nowadays.

what are your current system specs? What games do you play? At what resolution do you play?

This thread might have some relevant info for you.

you are really better off getting a cheap mobo and cpu. like an athlon x2 with and one of the cheaper 770 boards and pairing it with a 4850 or GTS250

Especially if he has a single-core opteron. Also, going used either on the FS forums or ebay will make $200 go much farther than buying new.

@ $200.00 you can now get an HD5830. While it's not the most power efficient of ATI's current offerings, it uses way less than the GTX-260, HD4870/4890 and performs on par with the latter. It also has a better feature set. Dx11, eyefinity, etc...

Take ultimate control over your game and crank it up with scalable performance. Go ahead, max out the settings and put the ATI Radeon HD 4890 through its paces.

Sweet! Thats the card I use and I love it. Have 2 22" monitors in eyefinity and am loving it. It may not be as fast as other cards but it is quiet as hell and ocs nicely.

you can get a used gtx 260 for as little as $100 if you look hard enough, id say avg of $125-$135 ive seen many on hard forum for that price
HD4870 $100-$125
hd4850 $65-$85

Id go with a hd5770 for the $150-$175 new and just buy a game with the left over cash,FO3 goty is only $29.99 on steam now
