A very easy way to get a feel for the operation of a Linux install is to get Knoppix Linux. It boots directly from its CD, so there's no worring about partitions and formatting just yet, you can just jump into a KDE session with full support for most tasks, and get a feel for it. Then once you've gotten an idea about how things work, using the command line, etc., you can go for a full distribution installation. It's also helpful to get to know the names of the various applications, so that when you do a full installation of another distribution, know can have some idea of what you want and don't want to install.
