Best Value/Performance System

Tryin to create a super cheap computer for a friend. Value/performance is key here. I am also located in Canada so prices are in CDN.

Heres what I came up with so far:

I wanted to get him a S939 Mobo and CPU but can't swing it with the low budget.
Any and all suggestions are welcome.

I plan to overclock.

Make sure to get a decent mother board then something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813136163 or an EPOX board. Best bet for CPU would probably be something like athlon 3000+ make sure you always check the forums for hotdeals and if anyone is selling any parts you may want. You should check out best buy i know right now they are runninh a special on a seagate 120G HDD its only ATA but you are on a budget right ? GL with everything

Don't forget to use http://www.pricenetwork.ca or http://www.pricegrabber.ca for prices.

Site I would also recommend:
http://www.anitec.ca
http://www.ncix.com
http://www.canadacomputers.com
http://www.shoprbc.com

The last two only charge $10 for shipping regardless of the size of the order. I would recommend that since you can order a case like the Coolermaster Centurion 5 without the power supply for around $70 to $80 CDN then add a good solid Enermax Noisetaker 420 watt for around $80 from either place. DO NOT TRY TO SPEND LESS FOR A POWER SUPPLY!!! My Enermax noisetaker 420 has voltages that are like only 1% off. The proof is here:

And a good, cheap DVD burner is NEC ND3540.

I would also go with a Western Digital hard drive and a PCI-E card.

Crap, I realize I'm adding money to the list but you'd have a harder time to upgrade if you don't do that change. Plus, the Sempron 3100+ is way more powerful than that 2500+.

\EDIT: Just found a cool solution. A motherboard with PCI-E and ONBOARD VIDEO! The MSI RS482M-IL is available on both shoprbc and canadacomputers for $100 or $108.

\ANOTHER EDIT: By choosing that motherboard, you get to save over $50 on a video card and it's more than $20 less than the other motherboard you chose. So, really, you're able to spend more on the power supply and case after all.

or...
http://www.shoprbc.com/ca/shop/product_details.php?pid=12178&cid=386

So, here we go...(I?ll use canadacomputers prices)

MSI MSI RS482M-IL motherboard with integrated video and PCI-E $100

AMD Sempron 3100+ processor $117

OCZ value series 512 MB memory $62

Coolermaster Centurion 5 case $80

Enermax Noisetaker 420 watt power supply $80

Western Digital Caviar 200 GB hard drive $105

NEC ND3540 DVD burner $52

Total for this setup is $596 and add $10 for shipping then your provincial tax. You have much better quality parts and much faster CPU.
Other devices...Logitech optical mouse $9 to $14 or more depending on which one you choose, Microsoft keyboard $17, and Logitech speakers $19 (couldn?t find the small, cheaper Altec Lansing on that site).

I read newegg comments saying it needs a BIOS update.

Thanks for the replies.

I noticed that mobo was mATX, I wouldnt have any problems mounting it in a normal ATX case would I? I imagine I wouldn't.

Cause Im thinking of trying to swing: MSI RS482M4-ILD mATX S939 RS482 DDR PCI-E16 SATA RAID Video Sound LAN 1394 Motherboard

that with a s939 3200+.

No, it will fit just fine. And that MSI MB should work great.

I would go with an Antec case w/PSU. You should be able to find one for around $80-100 (kind of guessing because I don't look at Ca prices very often).

No dude, I looked all around on Canadian sites. Just not worth it for the price difference. And besides, althought Antec and Enermax are both popular, I've read more messages about Antec failing than Enermax. One guy said he kept on insisting on another Antec until he blew out 3 in a row. LOL Then there's the guy who posted here about his Maxtor HD that caught on fire. I know these are individual cases, but if I had the choice...

Anyway, BTW, the 3200+ isn't that much more powerful than the 3000+ but it's still way more powerful than anything socket A for example. If you want to choose another motherboard, usually, the best known brands are: Abit, Asus, DFI and MSI.

I'd get atleast a 9600 Pro, you can get a Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro for around $100, he'll be way happeir with that I think.

I bought a 9200 and I had to replace it because it was to slow for my games.

The thing is he doesn't play any video games at all.

Im gonna try and go with MSI RS482M4-ILD mATX S939 RS482 DDR PCI-E16 SATA RAID Video Sound LAN 1394 Motherboard and a 3200+ A64. The 3200 is on sale and only a few dollars more than the 3000. I would have much prefered to get a NForce4 mobo and a seperate videocard but that is out of his budget.

What do you guys think of the 420W Thermaltake PSU? I see its very cheap but not sure how it is against a generic brand and or a 350W Enermax?
