Rollo, how loud is your 5800?
The other thing is that I have some money to spend now, ie before grad school/ after working, but in a year I'll probably be broke. I'm wondering if that shouldn't factor into my decision. I just put together my new system.
The 5800 is not loud, it does not have the infamous FlowFX, it uses a cooler more like the 5900 Ultras use.
If you have money to spend now and won't be able to upgrade in a year, a 5800/9700 would be the slowest I'd consider. There are games coming out you'll want to play that a 4200 just WON'T play, like D3.
For the guy that said IGP is what most people use, I really doubt that is what most computer gamers use. That is what most Grandpas use.
Most gamers would have at least GF3/R8500 by now, I would think. I'm just trying to help the guy. Telling him to buy an old card now to save $100 isn't help if next year he can't play the games he wants to, and I don't think 3-4 year old DX8 tech is going to cut it next year.
