You can head to Shreveport, La for some casino actions, only 3 hrs away.

My parents and sisters aren't big gamblers, unfortunately (or, fortunately?). I am, but I satisfy that urge during trips to Vegas from California every month or so. ;)

It looks like the cruise that my family and I were hoping to take together over winter break (Dec. 21-January 1) will be too pricey for our budget.

Instead of sailing off somewhere, my family is trying to decide on a nice place to visit within driving distance (max 15 hours each way?). We enjoyed visiting Hilton Head in the past, but that 20-hour drive is a bit much.

We are hoping for a change of scenery from Dallas, and are looking for a nice place for a family to do things together (swim in the pool, sightsee, do bonding-type activities). Due to the fact that all of my siblings are spread out across the country, we only get to spend family time together once or twice a year for a week or two at a time, and we really want to make the most of our vacation this Christmas.

Any suggestions (specific cities/locations) would be greatly appreciated, thank you. :)

EDIT: Thank you for all of the suggestions so far! I have e-mailed the options of South Padre Island and Colorado to my parents so far.

It's a little bit further, but worth the extra 2 hours

The awesome

Big bone lick state park?
beaver road?
Union?

ROFL. :D

South Padre is very nice and secluded during the holidays, and Corpus Christi is not far away and also has some nice tourist stuff.

I would recommend a tour of south texas and the Hill country. Start with a couple of days in Austin and see the state capital, 6th street, lake Travis, etc..., then maybe a day each in San Marcus and New Brunsfel, then on to San Antonio to visit the Alamo and the riverwalk, and if time permits on to Corpus and SPI (Only 3hrs from SA)

I like taking trips this way for several reasons, it breaks up the driving into several smaller chunks, and if you get tired of one area just move on to the next.

My parents are really warming up to the idea of driving to South Padre, and I like your idea of touring South Texas while we're at it.
