Best used small car for money?

I have a F150 I love and plan on keeping. I just need a budget small car to commute with to save gas money and miles on the truck. I've looked at Honda but man they are big $$ for used cars. 03-06 Ford focus look to be had for a song and a dance. Not sure if they have issues or what? Any suggestions for something cheap 4k-8k budget, reliable, easy to work on, no euros. Thanks

what is your typical commute?

if it is mostly highway I would suggest looking at a Buick. the 3800 V6 that most have is pretty much bullet proof and can easily go up to 200,000 miles on it. it is easy to work on and parts are cheap. the downside is that the styling is pretty ugly and it is definitely larger than a focus/civic/cobalt.

Miata? :awe:

I'd like to take it on a cross country trip later in the year. Something like a miata has probably been ragged on as well. I understand the love some have for vehicles but its just a tool to me. As long as it gets me to point a to point b reliably and cheaply I'm happy.

35 miles a day. I live in bfe and everything is out of the way. If I feel like going to the city it can easily end up being a 30 mile one way trip.

The Focus is good.

Why would you buy some stupid inefficient 3.8L 90 degree pushrod piece of shit stone age Buick with 130hp?

Just thinking about American cars from the 90s and early 00s makes me depressed (the Focus isn't American)

My vote is for a 90's Civic VX. On the highway (65mph) it should get approximately 58mpg US and a well-maintained manual should go well past 300,000 miles before needing major mechanical maintenance. If you want something newer and dont mind a 2 seater, a first-gen Insight would be even better, or a first-gen Prius if you want something bigger.

The Corolla is a solid choice but it's not an economy monster like the others I mentioned. I'd consider one if the price were right.

I dont like the older Mazda engines and most American cars will get worse gas mileage.

you don't know much about Buicks obviously. 205 hp and 230 lbs of torque. with 27 MPG on the highway. most people I know are getting closer to 30 mpg on the highway.

they are a good purchase for a commuter car. My wife's parents buy buicks regularly, so I've been driving them off and on for the last ~10 years. I HATE them in every way an enthusiast would...but for reliable, cheap, comfortable transportation, they are hard to beat. The engines definitely get decent gas mileage...and have enough power even if it feels very uninspiring in its delivery (the crappy Automatics are partially to blame).

I had a '95 Buick LeSabre with the 3800, it was a great car overall.

Road handling/etc are exactly what you'd expect, it's a boat.

Comfort/reliability are outstanding. Original motor/tranny were still going strong well over 200k, and sold it still running. Only replaced suspension bits, starter, some ignition thing in the steering wheel (receptor for security key dealie).

Fuel economy in town = meh to poor depending on driving habits.
Fuel economy on hwy = good to excellent (I regularly saw 30+ using 89 doing constant 70).

All that said, I think the Focus would make a better choice if you're doing more than 50% of your driving in town.

If you do get a Focus, make sure it has the Duratec motor, it's in all '05+, and in some '04 models. It's a significant improvement over the older Zetec and especially the SPI motors in older Foci. No timing belt to fuss about, and the best fuel economy and power of the Focus motors (the SVT had 170hp instead of the 130hp regular Zetec, but it was pretty high strung, the Dura 2.0 can be built to 200+hp NA, but in my mind it's almost idiotic to worry about, stock is fine for a DD).

I have a 2.0L with the 5-speed, and I average over 30mpg driving mostly city, and sometimes like a bit of a hoon. On long trips I average 40+, even with AC, luggage, etc.

dont the 05ish impalas have the 3800 option also?

my gramps just sold his 05 le sabre with 55k miles on it. he hates not having a warranty, so he got a new focus. i thought it was a step down, but he loves the car so far.

also, you gotta realize... hes going from a F150 to a commuter, even kicking it up to 27 is a huge savings. i have a 2001 dodge ram truck, i got a 98 civic for 1200 to save some gas. it gets 29mpg on average, but my daughter drives it now. so, i got a 95 subaru legacy for 1200 that gets 26. i can fill up both cars for less than i fill up my truck. i still have the truck, im going to make it into a project and weekend warrior vehicle.

Mazda 323. If you can find one rust free in good running condition buy it. They really were good little cars.

Pontiac Vibe
Same thing as a toyota matrix which is just a re bodied toyota corrola but with a pontiac's resale value. I just bought an 03 for $2k a couple months ago. It is a boring but but very practical car. Should get mid 20s city and lower 30s highway. The only thing I don't like about mine is it has some nasty blind spots do to the way they styled it trying to hide that it is a station wagon.
