<< Hey, where do all of these companies go anyway? Eagle doesn't seem to be making new cars, neither does Geo. >>

eagle was just a leftover chrysler division from when they bought amc and renault. the cars had reliability problems and didn't sell so they killed it off. geo was chevy and yeah. the geo prizm is the chevy prizm and the geo tracker is the chevy tracker.

Go for the Protege.....I remembered test driving a 90 Protege MT with 90K and it had some zip to it.
It ran a whole lot better than the 93 Corrolla I had at the time.

I was impressed.
I can imagine a 95 Protege would be a nice ride.
I'm actually looking for a new car and I've been eyeing the new Protege.

"You're going to be forced to spend the extra $1,500 in repairs when you buy the lower end GM, Ford or Dodge vehicles.

Check the repair records! "

Of all of those, the Mazda is the least craZAppy.

I don't like the Cavalier/Sunfire. They handle like crap and I don't like their interiors or styling. The low-tech pushrod engine is a dog.

I'd pick a Saturn over the Cav-Fire, but not a SC1. Those engines are also weak and run out of breath real fast, as they redline at something like 5000, but torque (and therefore power) fall down well before that.

I rather like Neons, they handle quite well and their 16 valve engines are strong for a little car, but their electrical integrity apparently leaves something to be desired, not to mention the head gasket failures of the first several model years. I know you?re looking for a manual, but I thought I?d add that the 3-speed automatic is unacceptable.

I agree with others, check out the Prizms and Corollas. Very solid, reliable, comfortable and almost bulletproof.

No comment on the Metro, except to say that people looking for good mileage without giving up performance or their dignity usually sway toward a Honda Civic DX, LX, VX, or HX.

EDIT: Oh yeah! The Sentra is another good one, but you have to get the 5 speed. The automatic Sentra feels like a dog unless you're at 90% throttle all the time. The 5 speed has enough pep from the 115 HP, 1.6 L VVT engine in the (95-99) and good mileage too.

PS: the 95-99 200SX is the 2 door version of the Sentra.

They're expensive used cars, but Acura Integra have the highest used car reliability ratings.

<< Considered a 93-95 Eagle Talon/Eclipse? You can get a Turbo/AWD if great condition for under 4g's... plus the car's engine is rock solid and there are a LOT of people that know a great deal about these cars... check out DSM Trader... That would be my next used car...

I was really interested for the Pontiac Sunfire, but after looking over the cars again, the Eagle Talon TSi looks pretty sweet! Without AWD for $3400 US and with AWD for $3900. AWD would kick ass for the winters here but I'm not sure if I wanna pay the gas and price overhead, fwd with winter tires should still be pretty good?

I might be wrong but I don't think it has VVT.

Got my 1995 Sentra GXE auto and power everything for $4650 with 45,000 miles on it.
I consider that the deal of the year for me =)

No major problems so far - just a busted thermostat and O2 sensors.

Definitely go for it if you can find it for around that price. I think this car could last me another 7-10 years, at least.

Nissan ~ Driven

edit: i get 33-35 mpg in mixed highway/local driving.

You mean I'm not planning to rice the cars up? lol. I'm a student, I think that would be fairly obvious otherwise I wouldn't care about used economy cars.

Besides, the only cars that are good for either are waaay more expensive than what I'm looking for. Ricemobiles aren't good for either ;)
