Best Used Car for 5-7k?

What is the fastest car you could get with around 60k miles for around 5-7k? Maybe not the fastest but at least sporty and it has to be relatively reliable. I am sure I would eventually do some mild modifications to it so a good aftermarket would be a plus. Good looks and reputation are important to. What do you guys think? I am very open to suggestions.

The problem with an S13(91-94 240SX) is to make it fast you really need to do an SR swap and then you have a not so street legal car with an engine that is very difficult to get fixed if it breaks down. But by all means they are nice cars. I wonder if it would be feasable to get an S13 fastback and swap in a red top front clip for less than 7k?

Very possible. Just check ebay for the front clips. They're out there. Also shop arouna at your local tuning shops, though I'm not sure how much redtops are going for around here. There are only minor differences between the S13 and S14 motors and those can be modded equally, so I wouldn't care which is in the car as long as I had the $$ to mod it :D

And you specified "not the fastest" hence my 240sx suggestion :p I know they're not that quick stock, but they're good enough. If you really want to, you can just go turbo KA.

And the SR20DE/T motor is f'n near bulletproof. The tranny is what you need to watch out for. I haven't seen a smart driver blow a SR20, but I've seen then destroy the transmissions on them.

You also might want to look into used LT1 Trans-Am/Camaro and SW20 MR2 Turbo (if you can find one in good condition)

What years were the fox-body Mustangs produced? Are there any particular versions or years to look for? I don't know as much about Mustangs as I do Silvias. How reliable are they?

It's a Ford. Does that answer your question? :p

Generally you'll want to look for 88-93 for Fox Body mustangs. They have ungodly amounts of aftermarket and are as reliable as any other regular car as long as you take care of it.

They've been making the Mustang on essentially the same crappy Fox chassis since 1979. Kind of reminds me of Windows ME. "Lets see how much junk we can pile on an obsolete base."

1985.5-1989 Porsche 944
1987-1989 Porsche 944 S
1982-1985.5 Porsche 944 Turbo
197?-198? Porsche 924 Turbo

They're as reliable as you'll find - IF it's been kept up in good shape. Gotta figure it's a Porsche....it's been babied it's whole life....and if it has you can get 250k miles out of it EASY, if it's not cared for 50k is a better guess. Repairs are pretty good, just a tad bit more. About ($30 yourself, $35 @ the shop, $50 @ dealer) for an oil change & you need to replace the timing/balance shaft belts every 30,000 miles ($500 @ the shop, $1500 @ dealer, $100 youself).

I should add that unless you get a Turbo model you won't have blazing speed off the line (about a 7 second 0-60), but you will beat ANYTHING out there in a curve (This includes the Lotus Elise <- verified by autocar). The Turbo however is pretty quick off the line (~5.8 0-60), but still isn't a drag-racer. Not that it matters, it's a Porsche, do you really care HOW fast it is? Everyone knows it's just FAST ;).

A 91 240SX with around $1500 in aftermarket parts will put you in the 0-60 6s range.

91 because they got the best cams out of all the 240sx.
91 because that year's model (89-93) are the lighter of the two
91 because the SE model has Super HICAS
91 because it has the KA24DE engine (twin cams) as suppose to the SOHC.

I believe a stock 91 240sx with the DOHC engine can do 0-60 around 7.5ish. IF you add the usual intake/exhaust/header which should cost around (conservatively) $1000, plus the JWT ECU upgrade which is another $600, you'll knock off another second off that 0-60 time.

If you want to keep your car somewhat legal, here's what I would buy:

1991 240SX SE - $4000 AT MOST. AVG is around $3500
JWT ECU upgrade - $600 (price includes tuning if you happen to live in so. cal)
hotshot headers - $400
injen cold air intake - $250
apexi catback exhaust - $600
electric fan setup - $150
lightened pulleys - $450

Total COST: $6450 Remember though, these prices are RETAIL prices so if you have hookups or buy used, it will be cheaper.

With that setup, you'll have one FAST naturally aspirated 240sx that'll be pushing near 200hp, not to mention the GREAT handling.

This is the EXACT same route (minus the cold air intake and headers since I'll be going turbo and don't want to end up selling those) that I am taking to build up my 95 240sx once I get it.

By the ways, I really want a 300ZX. They're old school, but they still look freaking tight!

He said that he wants something that's a little bit fast - that knocks the Avenger/Sebring out of the running.
