Best upgrade from a 32 inch tv?

I'm looking to upgrade my LCD 1080p LG television to something better. I'm unsure weather to go with a 42 inch or 47 inch. I mainly play ps4 and watch movies and Netflix. I don't have hd cable either since I don't watch much tv.

Anything specific that is recommended ? Trying to stay in the upper 400-500 budget.

If you can extend your budget to $650 you can get a 50" Vizio E500i-A1 smart TV. It's a pretty good midrange set. It gets good scores in the input lag tests, I know you're a gamer so this might be important. The only major issue with this set is the local dimming can cause black crush and reduce shadow detail.

Are you limited by size?

Yea 650 could be doable. I've had credit cards I haven't used in forever so it could help improve my credit I suppose. So long that one was cancelled because of no use lol.

My living room is decent sized, currently the 32 inch tv is 8-9 feet from the couch and is just sitting on a small coffee table so I was being lazy and figured the stands that come with the 42 or 47 inch tv's are small enough that it would fit on the table. Otherwise anything bigger I will need an actual tv stand.

Another reason I figured 42 or 47 would be nice is because I don't have an hd cable box, don't watch much tv, so it would mainly be used for movies, ps4, ps3, Netflix.

Doesn't seem like a bad deal. At your viewing distance I'd go bigger for movies and gaming but if you're really not interested in spending much more the one you linked doesn't seem bad at all.

Yeah I've seen it in store a bunch of times I just had passengers with me so I had no way to buy one and take it home. Come to think of it a 50 inch would probably not fit in the back seats easily. 47 would be ideal too but I haven't seen any around the same price, it would make more sense to get the 50 for the dollar difference.

Personally I'd rather have a higher quality picture on a smaller TV than to have to make do with crappy quality on a big TV. The Vizio looks like it's well reviewed (although it is walmart). Vizio makes pretty good quality TVs from what I've seen though.

Both the 50" i mentioned and the 42" sze5003 mentioned are the same panel just a different size. I would expect similar results regarding quality between them.

Yeah they are the same model just the screen size is what is different. Although if you don't have hd cable I can understand why the 50 inch would show as lower quality.

I'll go by walmart on my way home today and see if they have anything else in stock.

At 8-9' get the biggest you can afford. 47" is definitely not too big.

I guess I will go to the store to see in person if the stands they come with would be an issue for my small table. That and I just want to be there in person to decide weather a 42 or 50 would be better.

If I do decide on the 50 I'm not sure how I'll take it home in my Lancer.

Friend with a truck, Uhaul truck (pickup rental is pretty cheap) or rent a truck from Home Depot (real cheap if you return it in 75 minutes).

Yeah the home depot trucks cost 20 bucks for about an hour or so. I live close so that will help. Have not decided yet although I do like the 42 inch model. Hoping the stand is not wider than my small table where it will be sitting. Going to wait a bit more to see what else is out there.

I'm not sure although you could be right. They never have them sitting with the stands connected in the store, they are always mounted.

The stand that is connected to my current 32 inch tv is 6-7 inches long and maybe 5 wide.

I've got a 60, 50, and 42.

Watching on the 42 is noticeaby smaller than the others. Try and get the 50 if you can.

Well I'm sure when you are used to watching on a 50 or 60 that a 42 would seem a lot smaller. That's why I will wait a bit for a sale or something because I'm also going to need a tv stand if I get a 50. If I stick with 42 or 46 then I may get away with my tiny coffee table being used now.

I ended up with a LG 42LN5300. The picture quality I think is really nice and it's pretty sharp. The store advertised it at 120hz but I believe I found out when I got home that it's 60Hz. Pretty basic LED tv, I didn't really care for the smart features of the others.

I did play 2k14 on it and I'm using the vivid setting and everything is super sharp, maybe too sharp. I didn't notice much input lag if any at all. Bf4 was also smooth except I had to mess with the network smoothing factor a lot because I must have been on a bad server. Big difference from my 32 inch for sure. Although I had no issues playing in single player, didn't notice any lag.

I was originally going to get the vizio 420i A0 but the picture on the LG looks a lot better. I still have the box so I could go exchange it at walmart.

But does anyone have any custom settings for playing through the console to minimize any issues, should I be messing with all the settings because there are a ton. I feel like vivid mode is great for tv and super sharp on ps4 but it also could be too bright ? Maybe it's just my contacts getting dried up because by the time I play it's late and I've had them in a long time.

You want to get the gray levels and black levels properly set so that white is white but not blooming, gray is neutral, and blacks are deep without crushing. Vivid is almost always too bright with incorrect black levels.

I've been reading on avs forums that this tv has decently low input lag. One of the things they mention is to set your hdmi input label to pc so that any input lag is eliminated, possibly turn off some of those extra features in the advanced picture settings.

I'm going to try that after work because 2k14 I kind of felt like my guy was slow but then I remember he was also slow feeling on the old tv too.

Cool thanks for these. I'll try them today and see how it looks. If I like these settings along with the hdmi input set to pc, I think this may make it perform better.

I did some searching the net and found out the tv has an input lag of 28ms, not bad I suppose but not the best.

28ms is quite good for a TV. It's less than two frames. Very few TVs get close to 1 frame. Depending on who did the test my Sony can get between 16.9ms and 19ms of input lag in game mode with no image enhancement on (no noise reduction, motion compensation etc). These screen effects increase the input lag because the TV has to add processing to the image before it's output.

I could not find the vizio we talked about in the first page though. Going to mess around with the settings you gave me and see what I get.

Edit: tried your settings and it just made the picture look kind of faded and half washed out. The changing of the hdmi input to pc mode makes the screen kind of blurry. Not sure what other settings I have to mess with.

Leaving it on vivid with the motion effects off and other processing effects off like you mentioned made the gameplay seem a bit quicker.

I have the LG 39LN5300. Basically identical except for screen size. I did read a review where the 39 has a lower lag but I couldn't say for sure since I don't have the 42LN5300. I had to do a lot of settings adjustment to get mine good enough for my liking. I actually used another's settings that I read about. And yeah, 39" and 42" get advertised at 120Hz but in reality they are 60Hz. The larger screen models in the 5300 series are true 120Hz though. They also have more lag according to reviews I read and not as ideal for pc gaming. I use mine for desktop pc gaming and its pretty nice. Text reading isn't that good though. I use a separate monitor for surfing the net.
