Anyone have any good recommendations for a universal car mount (navigational purposes) for a phone? I've got a Droid and Droid Eris and am looking for something that could mount either device, anyone have experience with such a device?

I use this kit (SM-310) for my Droid and with my usb charger it works great for when I use the Droid as a GPS. I attached mine with the clip-on air vent setup and surprisingly, it holds the phone very well. It's cheap but it works with pretty much any phone from what I've tried.

i was wondering how the air vent clips held up. i need to get one as well, but have been waiting on finding one that didnt press buttons on the side of my phone. that and im too lazy to actually shop for a suitable one.

So that's what I ended up getting, the SM-310. It's a little frustrating, that I can't find many reviews/comparisons on different units. But this little guy works good! Window mount, dash mount and vent mount. Adjustable, and the mount itself does not block the 3.5mm jack, or the USB on the Droid (haven't tried the Eris yet). I turned it horizontal and drove for about 20 minutes that way, without any problems (better for me to have the usb port down, and the 3.5mm jack pointing left). Feels solid enough to drive like for long distances without it coming out.

Akron SM-310 for $19 shipped at Amazon for the win!

Glad it worked for ya. I use my Droid the exact same way in my car and I've yet to have a problem, even when driving on these horribly maintained roads around me. The mount holds the phone like a champ!

Couple more thoughts about the SM-310 after a second day. It's difficult (impossible?) to detach the holding bracket from the vent or neck mount without removing the vent or neck mount from what it is holding on to (does that make sense)? You really have to unsuction the neck mount, in order to detach the bracket. Secondly, a couple times clamping the Droid down in the bracket, the foam pads depressed the camera button.

Overall still worth it.

I ordered the SM-312 dashboard friction mount. It should be here Monday, I'll give impressions after I've used it a couple times. My stand alone GPS has a dashboard friction mount and it has been perfect.
