SilentPC Review

Absolutely superb job from the guys at SPCR...
Their own description:

"This article is one of the most demanding we've tackled at SPCR in quite a while. The idea for the article germinated many months ago, but it's taken all this time to assemble the samples, necessary components and new test gear to bring it to fruition. The testing and writing took several weeks. Turion 64s work on many desktop socket 754 motherboards. What's so hard about that? It's what we thought too, but correctly documenting all the details turned out to be pretty challenging. In the end, it's still not a definitive piece on the subject, but we think it's a good introduction and overview"

On full load, a 2.2GHz MT-40 Turion draws only 3W more power than a 2.13GHz Dothan, and the overall power consumption of the Turion system is 1W less than the Dothan system. That's nice.

Very good job measuring the power differences there.
Now, I wonder how a Turion would compare to current s939 Venice chips? They run cooler than the newcastle they were measured against.

I posted about this review like 4 hours ago... though my post seems to have gone to oblivion (aka page 2)...

I would hardly call it the "best" Turion article because it does not deal with performance at all (I think a lot of TechReport's performance measurements are actually wrong) but it is the best comparison with regards to power because they decided to actually test it properly... unlike tech report, et al. There are a few inaccuracies but hardly anything that would affect the measurements by a watt or two.

wow, even the regular A64 only turns in 54 watts under load. and that was with an older model drawing 1.5V stock.

It makes me wonder when we'll see those Turion X2s released... hopefully soon.

If Turion really fits the 35W power envelope then it should be slightly less efficient than Yonah. The problem, however, is that Yonah got a brand new platform and, from what I hear, it's quite a bit more power efficient than Sonoma so the burden is probably going to be on the chipset/wireless lan manufacturers.

Looks like I won't be building a Turion system any time soon. Not that I had a need for one anyway.

If you include the Northbridge, it looks to me like it will be a dead heat...

Edit On second thought, we just don't have the info to even guess yet. We don't even know the specs of the S1 socket yet...

I think they skipped the Venice because it's dual channel and Turion isn't...
