Best to wait for upgrade?

The game I was planning on upgrading for is HL2, but now that its officially been delayed I am thinking I should wait to upgrade.

Do you think its best to wait till around the time of release? That way prices will be lower and new technology will be out.

The only downside I can see is my video card and RAM (which I plan to sell to help pay for the new card and ram) wont be worth as much...

What card are you using right now? Older items don't drop in value as quickly as new items, generally.

I always try to wait to upgrade until a game comes out that I can't play at high detail. It's not easy, especially with the A64 coming out.

I think waiting is pointless. Not unless you have a 9700 or above paired with a Intel p4c or AMD 400 FSB Mhz capable mobo.

Want to wait for the new CPUs and RV40/NV40 cores? Sure that is a few months, then a few more months afterwards for them to be actually affordable to the general public. You are looking at a relatively very expensive upgrade considering the technology coming out will be brand spanking new and marketed to make it look like miracle hardware.

Regs. Then in a few months after that u see pci express and u need a new mobo,ddr2 and vid card. Its a sh1tty game of waiting and theres no good way around it. Obsolescence is inevitable

I dont see waiting as pointless...

The same video card I buy now will probably be a lot cheaper around the HL2 release time...

I say do this. 9800 np/2500+ barton asus a7delux 1 gig mushkin 3200 or buffalo tech and some good cooling. Dont forget a 16x dvd drive and a good psu. Waiting is pointless because something better is ALWAYS on the horizon.

I dont really want new stuff, what I'm saying is, the stuff I buy now will cost substantually more then it will months from now. And there is no point in buying new fast hardware to have it just running Internet Explorer and outdated games.

But I do want a barton :D

draggoon01,

Also probably true.

Looks like you answered your own question....

Wait, your current stuff won't depreciate as fast as the stuff you plan on getting. You'll save more by holding off. Infact, I'd wait until you have the game to upgrade. It seems like more of a reward to actually see the difference it makes.
