Best time to sell a motorcycle?

z1ggy

Lifer
Finding myself unfortunately not riding the bike much anymore except if I take the lady out for a spin, or riding with my friend. Is it best I sell it now toward the end of the season, or wait until early spring next year? Obviously want the most money for it.

If it matters, I live in CT and it's an 01 GSXR 600 with a little under 24k on it. In great condition.

A clean crotch rocket will sell anytime as long as it is in the magical $3k price range.

Heck if you're bored why not reserve a few weekends a year to track the bike? A cheap tracksuit, boots, helmet, gloves and you're good. It's best to trailer it there but not necessary. You have the perfect bike for it. Paid for and expendable.

Already have the gear. Reason I don't is bc of cost really. A track day weekend will prob cost me around $500 to do and potentially that plus the cost of my bike and medical costs if I dump it and get all fucked up.

I was going to say beginning of summer, but yeah, Spring sounds good too. (Whenever really sunny weather starts to come around)

Either way, I don't think you're getting much for that bike.

$3k.

The bike plus leather race pants, textile pants, leather race boots, leather jacket, mesh jacket, leather gaunlet gloves, full face helmet with 3 shields and the rear stand. All those accesories alone are prob worth about $500 (used).

If you're going to dump a bike, the track is the place to do it. A lowside and you should be okay. Highsides tend to break bones but otherwise the risk of an injury accident is probably lower on the track than it is on the street.

If you wait until next spring, the book value of the bike will drop. I sold my bike last year on July 31st. I got well above book value due to condition, and that's in Michigan. We have a short riding season, but there is still at least three months left.

Yeah I might put it on the market now... See what I get for offers. I won't accept less than 3k. Paid 3.2 for the bike and then bought all that gear, which I am willing to include in the deal. I figure I am better off trying to include it with the bike to entice buyers, rather than selling it separately, or holding it in case I decide to buy another bike next spring or at any other point in time.

It will sell now (within a week IMO) or next spring for 3k especially with all the gear.

If you get an offer of $2800 are you really going to store the bike for another winter just to possibly sell it for $200 more in the spring?

I sold my gear separately for another $400 or so after fees on Ebay. Although I kept my leather jacket, I'd rather wear it than give it away. And you probably won't find a buyer that can fit in all your gear anyways.

I look at gear as kind of like workout clothes or underwear. After you've worn them for a couple seasons, sweating in them, breaking them in with your bodily fluids I really don't see that there is much value there for someone else.

I know I don't want to wear your stinky sweaty leathers.

How old is the helmet?
And I tend to agree with Jules. Jacket and gloves could sell, but I wouldn't buy used pants or helmet. But WmM2 shows it can be done.
Probably a better chance to sell the gear separately. At a minimum you'll want to have a bike-only price ready for the group of potential buyers that don't want/don't fit your gear.

True. I will consider this.

Yeah this is all true, but I assume a newer rider would be wanting my bike. He/she may be willing to take "smelly" gear on the cheap if they dont have much money to spare.

All the gear is 2 years old. When I got this bike after I sold the one before it, I bought all new stuff. My first set of gear was total garbage and I wanted to get nicer stuff.

The bike only price is probably closer to 2800, but it's whatever the market says it should be. Prices up here in the NE where riding is limited can get pricey. For a 13 year old bike, it's in amazing shape. It's also got a very unique under tail that I've yet to see on any of the older gixxer's I see around here.

True, but none of my gear smelled. And it wasn't all clothes. I sold a helmet (like new), front end stand, carb guages, soft luggage, gloves, boots I had only worn once or twice, etc. I was really suprised the boots sold, and for more than I paid for them.
