Best time to go running is while you are at work.

I usually drink a couple .5 liter bottles of water in the early morning (from 7-930 or so) then take off at around 10 oclock, run 4-6 miles, then get back, shower change, and eat a philly cheese steak sandwitch.

Do cardio in a fasted state; without eating for eight hours. In the morning, your body will be very low on glycogen. Your body will use burn more fat this way.

This is wrong. Your body would just as well prefer to burn muscle if you run on an empty state.

I should have mentioned only doing Low Intensity Steady State (LISS) cardio for my suggestion above. LISS is done around 70% or your MHR (220 - age).

You would be correct if you were talking about doing a High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) cardio workout.

When doing LISS you want to do it in a fasted state so that your body burns excess fat. If you're going to do HIIT, then yes, eat before or your body will metabolize muscle for energy.

OP, don't know what your goals are, but if you're trying to drop fat from your frame, then do LISS.

It depends on the person. I like running in the early morning because it's cooler and very peaceful, but I'm not a morning person and so I always feel sluggish and tired. I like running in the afternoon or at night.

BTW, while I am an avid runner I pay no attention to the weight loss aspect of it, so I may be completely out of the ballpark, but some of the advice given here seems downright sketchy. So, I won't argue anyone because I'm not knowledgeable, but I will just say do some research before taking anyone's claims on ATOT.

If I only run 2 miles (because I'm more of a sprinter so anything more than that is a waste of my time really) would it hurt me if I ran in the morning right after I wake up? Especially right now since its like 30 degrees while I run? Usually I run about 6-7PM, usually try to wait almost 2 hours after eating before I go running. If I started running it would be around 6AM and what is the best meal to eat after? It would be just after 7 when I would be eating. Would it be bad if I ran on an empty stomach and everything, even if its only 2 miles?

How about if you don't have any excess fat? That would make running in the morning a bad thing right?

Your body will burn muscle first, fat second.

If you're doing any kind of weight training, run in the evening or after you've had a small bite to eat.

For me, I like to wake up at 5am and just jump right out of bed, throw some sweatpants on, and go running. I am so zoned out during the hour or so it takes to run that I don't get a chance to put it off all day. Then I come back, calm down, pass out, and wake up with exercise already out of the way.

Plus you smell bad anyway and are about to take a morning shower so might as well get sweaty then. This is coming from someone who hasn't run in over a year (I just bought new shoes to start again today, kind of hard to run in skate shoes), but that is what worked best for me.

This is true, and if you run prior to eating in the morning you will train your body to burn fat for energy also.

Any time in the morning up to noon. After that and it may interfere with sleep if you go to bed early. I'd say before 3PM is good.

In Summer I try to finish before the sunrise. In Winter, afternoons when it warms up. Cold weather doesn't agree with me, I try to keep my muscles warm.

Once again wrong info on ATOT. Surprise, surprise.

It depends on what you are running for. General fitness? Fat burning/weight loss? Cardio?

To burn fat the best thing do is is 3 hours before bed eat a high complex carb meal (pasta, with chicken, you still need protein), and then go to bed, you do not want to eat it to soon to bed or you will not sleep as well because it takes a while to digest complex carbs, and you will store them differently (mostly fat) if you sleep right away.

The next morning wake up, get hydrated, drink a protein shake and go out for a run. This is the prime time to burn fat, because your metabolism is only like this once a day. Because you have the carbs stored from last night your muscles have energy, but you are in a fasted state. Your body burns more fat this way. And, while some muscle is burned, it is A LOT less than the amoutn of fat burned. Studies show this, but no scientific reasoning has yet been found, except some seem to think that the release of IGF-1, (insulin growth factor 1) during sleep is still around in your blood stream so you burn less muscle. The protein shake is also there as well. Come back from the run and your metabolism has been kick started, make sure to then eat a high calorie, high carb meal with protein and fats to restore your bodies fuels. You do not store as much fat at this time so it is okay to eat fats, mono unsaturated of course, because instead of storing them you continue to burn it as energy after intensive exercise. In fact after a while your body gets used to bruning these types of fats and you benefit from it even when not eating after exercise. Also running in the morning helps some people wake up and the enorphins are a great way to start the day instead of jittery caffeine.

Myths, there is no fat burning zone, only overall calories burned matters. HIIT works because of the total calories burned. LISS is crap that magazines and other companies in the industries pushed. Read studies people.

right BEFORE you eat (i.e. the longest time has passed since you've last eaten, which is most likely when you wake up, before breakfast).

Also I forgot to add, that the only thing dangerous about running in the morning on a fasted state is not having the energy. if you ever get dizzy or light headed (especially going up a hill). Stop immediately. It means you need to eat cloeser to bed time (sleep less, if you sleep more than 8-9 hours) and get more carbs stored.

I like lunch time, personally. I get sleepy in the afternoon if I don't.
