Best time to buy parts

I am thinking about building a new PC. I am in no rush...so I am wondering when should i start to look into buying parts. Is there a particular time when new components get released (CPU,GPU, etc) it would suck to buy a part today and a month later a better part comes out. Thanks.

wait til the i7 lineup comes out in october. Prices will drop in the popular items now. I don't think ATI or nVidia is releasing any new gpu's soon so what you see now is what you get as far as higher end cards go. Same with DDR3 ram..prices are going to stay up for a while..but DDR2 should drop once i7 comes out.

That is incorrect. Once a new platform becomes the standard, the RAM for the previous platform actually increases in price. We saw it with 30-pin SIMMS, etc. For example, comparing DDR2 prices with PC2700 (which at one time was almost free) makes you reconsider increasing your memory over getting a new mobo and proc.

Here's the basic rule of thumb: if you need it today, buy it today. Whatever you buy will suck three years from when your bought it. What's a month or two compared to productivity?

If you're in no hurry, look for great deals on a case and PSU...know what you want, and will want later. Same with the DVD burner...there are tons that can burn at 20x, but you probably will never come close to achieving those speeds, so find a great deal on a quality burner regardless of the so called "top burn speed".

Prices on hard drives, procs and video always drop month-to-month. Last year was probably the first time in a decade that video price drops went stale, but otherwise get what you need, or get as much as you can afford.

agreed with what slugbait said. if you play the waiting game then you'll end up waiting forever because something new is also coming out just wait until you really need it like its no longer keeping up with games you wish to play, etc. then you should get the best you can with your current budget.

You've been a member here since 2005, and ask that question?
There will always be a better, faster, part coming out. Buy what you need and don't fret over it.
Technology marches on!

heh i know that technology comes out at a rapid pace...I joined in 2005 when i built my first computer and 3 years later I want a new machine. I just was thinking that there is a month or two that tons of things come out, like with video games. Thanks for the inputs!

yep, thats i7

i wouldnt really think about going with i7 yet as the cost of the motherboards, cpu, dd3 ram is pretty high now and the more mainstream products wouldnt be out until q1 or q2 2009
