best thing to call devices that are on a switch looking into the network

Like an IDS that isn't a single point of failure per se, not a bridge leading to the network. Something that might work passively, with a port on a switch that the rest of the network is on. I'm totally having a brain freeze and I cant think of the phrase....
 
Well, if it's connected to a switch, the only way it'll see all the rest of the network traffic is if the port is mirrored to all of the other ports on the switch.

Otherwise all you get is multicasts / broadcasts and unknown floods.

I'd vote for "probe."
