What is the best telemarketing experience you've ever had? Did you end up buying from the person? Please share any stories you have :)

Here's a summary of the call transcript for the best one I've ever had:

RING RING
Me: Hello?
Telemarketer: Would you....
**/me hangs up**

The best one I've ever had is when my phone rings once, then stops because someone else answered theirs. :cool:

So I take it that nobody has ever bought something from a telemarketer? If so, why do they continue to do it? I assume someone in this world must buy??? I ordered a newspaper subscription once from this guy who sounded really friendly and polite.

Nope.

I only talk to focus groups who offer me $100 for 1.5 hours to talk about products such as pizza, jeans, khaki's, printers, digicams, the Oregon lottery, etc.

I have 2 experiences I really like...

#1
<ring>
me: Hello
telemarketer: May I speak to Mr...<pause> <insert mispronounced last name>
me: sure, one second
<set phone down......check it again in 30 minutes to make sure they eventually hung up>

#2
<ring>
me: Hello
telemarketer: May I speak to Mr...<pause> <insert mispronounced last name>
me: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! <literally screaming into the phone as loud as I can until they hang up>

"Are you sure you don't want this card, it has great rates."
"I'm only 14."
"Oh."

Yeah, my sister had to get a cosigner for her card when she was 17 and employed. And I get offers when I'm 14. :)

So it looks like nobody has ever bought anything from a telemarketer except me? :( I guess I am naive to think it works.

Do businesses respond better to phone solicitation? Any one have experiences to share?

I should tell Discover card that. I have a fixed 8% and a fixed 10% card and they keep sending me these "great" offers of a variable 15%. That's like trading in a Porche for a Yugo.

I rank Telemarketers a little lower then scum sucking bottom feeding lawyers and used car salesman ;)

I've only bought once through "telemarketing", but it was a great deal for the time period. Back in like 2001, we got a call from SBC for phone service or something, but after a minute or so, as I was going to hang up politely, the sales guy asked if I was interested in SBC DSL. He seemed to expect a No out of me and ready to say the good byes and hang up, but I asked him for some details on the deal because I was tired of the 56K connection I had back then. The deal was a 768/256 DSL line for $29.99/mo, for a year, with the option to add on years for the same price (no contract). This was a great deal for me back then, since Comcast said they could not service my area (an it wouldve been over $40+ for a 1.5/512 line) and I was already paying $19.99 for my Earthlink 56K connection. I signed up for the deal on the same call.

And thats pretty much my only positive telemarketing experience...

Thanks Max, I was giving up hope that I was the only guy who had ever bought something from a telemarketer. I guess infomericals work better than telemarketing?

I've had a few good experiences... most were just chatting with the telemarketers even though they knew they weren't going to make a sale.

Once, when called to switch my long distance service over to <company x>, I taught the telemarketer about one of the websites that used to allow you to make long distance calls via the internet for free. I have no doubt that she tried it that night or the next day; we talked about free internet long distance for a good 15 minutes. *sigh* those were the good days before they started charging for that stuff.

Yeh, I hate paying for sh+t but I guess the free days are over :(

As for you comments, thanks, you have restored my faith that not everyone hates a telemarketer. I find most of them quite nice people.

As I see it, karma's a bi0tch and her brother retribution aint any better...
