I want the most impressive LCD screen that can be had for sub-$600. Mainly used for reading text, surfing the web, and watching the occasional movie/video :) Must have both analog and DVI inputs as well as do 1280x1024 resolution. Any suggestions?

Samsung 172T is around $570 at Newegg that's a really good one. The Hitachi 174 everyone talks about is under $500.

What about the NEC 1760V? Or the NX that hey have out now or something. The 1760V (17") has a 16ms response time and it is highly rated on Tom's Hardware and by reviewers on Newegg (out of 54 ratings, the avg rating is a 5 of 5 stars)...I know you're not a gamer but that one has got to be pretty good. However I don't know if it has dual inputs, so I myself will probably look elsewhere when I buy an LCD down the road.

I'll expand my price range to include the 191T. A 19" LCD just sounds more attractive, even if the resolution is the same :) How about the Dell 1901FP?

I'm seeking to educate myself with LCDs and I've been reading up on great articles about them because I am trying to decide if I want one in 9 months or not. I have heard things that you need a very good graphics card for DVI, but that sounds like bad advice in my mind. I use a Ge-Force4 Ti4200-128Mb (for now) that also has DVI and i'm sure it is good enough and it will most likely be with me in 9 months (regardless of the fact that I game occaisonally and plan to buy HL2 and things like that) as well. I also heard someone advise someone to buy a Radeon 9700 Pro or 9800 because you need "high end cards to run DVI well"...is this false like I am thinking? I'm very knowledgable with computers and components, but obviously I am trying to fill a huge deficiency when it comes to LCD monitors :).

This is only true if you want to use the native resolution. At 1280x1024 or 1600x1200 it is pretty clear that you need a fast card to run games at that resolution. However, on a 17" 1280x1024 lcd it is actually very playable at 1024x768, see for yourself, just don't go any lower. Lesser demanding games without fast 3d graphics, like SimCity, probably wouldn't look so good. And at the desktop you simply have to use the native resolution to make it look good. If you chose 1024x768 on a 1280x1024 it doesn't look so good.

Your Ti-4200 should work fine. But if you want to run at SXGA (1280x1024) or UXGA (1600x1200) with high detail and acceptable framerates, you should look into something faster. But seeing as you describe yourself as an occasional gamer, just keep your TI-4200 for the next 9 months.

No no I know that. I think the person actually might have been referring to that but he tried to make it out like you need a fast graphics card just to USE DVI--period. Perhaps he was forgetting part of what he was saying, or was accidentally being too vague :D and I guess it was 3 am too. However I am glad it is playable at 1024x768 because I was worried about that, and I do plan to keep my Ti4200 for another 9 months. If the quality significantly diminished going down to that, I probably would just buy a 19" CRT instead.
