open means everyone can hear what you're listening to

closed is the "normal" headphone people think of, where only you hear what it's playing

open can sometimes give you better sound

i did some searching on AT for ya

here's one link

and here's a second

replace "subscriber" with "forums" in the links if you need to

Open cans usually give you a better sound stage, but lack the bass for a stereo image. This is where closed ones are better. If you're a music lover, I give another vote for the Grado SR60s or SR80s. I would also consider the Sennheiser HD495s, but they lack in the mids without an amplifier. If you're a serious gamer, the Sony MDR-V6s are your best bet.

MDR-V6s retail for $80 I believe, but I've seen them as low as $69, though that was at online stores which including shipping, brings it back up to around retail price. I got my SR60s at Headroom, and I also bought their large earpads for a small sonic improvement, but they aren't necessary.

You're best bet would be to order from Headroom if you can't find it at a B&M store. They have a great reputation and great service.

the v600s are quite expensive $120 to $100.

Actually, theres quite a difference between the V600 and the VR6.. I think those are the two models.. Might want to ask the question at Headwize as well.

I made a mistake, the MSRP for the MDR-V6s is $110. The MDR-V600s are different from the V6s (their model numbers are confusing sometimes). You can read some reviews on the MDR-V6s here. And reviews for the MDR-V600s here.

The MDR-V600s are not supposed to be as good as the V6s. I do remember seeing them a Fry's electronics so if you live near one you may want to check them out. I didnt think they sounded all that great though but that is probably because I have AKG K501s which are some sweet headphones. I wouldnt recommend them though because they are hard to drive. I think something like the Grado SR-60 or Sennheiser HD495 or even HD535 would be your best bet.

SONY MDR-7506 beats anything in the sub-100 range. Well actually it's $150, but i found it on the net for $92.5. I think a store called Carlson Electronic has a page with it for that price but theyre closed now. Good news is that if you give that page's URL to Brookmays.com and tell them you want the price guarantee, they'll give em to you for that price.

Actually the Sony MDR-7506 and the V6's are exactly the same. The only differnce is the plug on the 7506 is supposed to be gold I believe. I tried a pair of the V6s on at Frys in Tempe Arizona and i didnt like them at all. I thought they were poorly constructed. I did a double take because i heard people talking about their construction being very good. To me they felt flimsy and not very sturdy at all. I also thought the sound wasnt all that great. Now I will give it somewhat of a break since they were demo headphones but still I was very dissapointed. Being they are closed also you dont get the airyness and spaciousness that some open headphones give.

Some good suggestions here already, you'll find something more than decent with a $100 budget.

I'd vote for some AKGs (but it's true that most of them would be much better hooked up to an amp). IMO the good old K240 are super comfy and sound great. Strongly suggest not going too much by reviews when buying headphones though: sound quality & comfort are soo subjective.

I am very impressed with my AKG's so far. They are built wondefully and they sound amazing and I dont think they are even fully broken in yet. For more reading about headphones try www.head-fi.org its a great forum with alot of great stuff to read. For buying headphones I suggest www.headphone.com that is where I got my AKG's and they have great service and good prices too.

d1abolic the V6 and the 7506's are identicle save for the plugs I think it was, If you follow that second link you gave and about the 5th review it says:

<< The truth is that the MDR-V6 (and its identical "pro" line sibling, the MDR-7506) are one of the most accurate sets of headphones on the market, and clearly the most accurate Sony headphone below the 3000. >>

I dont mean to quibble but I just want to point out that they are identicle headphones save for tiny differnces.
