I never realized how bad most store-bought tomato sauce was untill I lucked out on a good one. The big-name brands are mostly bland or very salty, with little or no taste at all. My current favorite is Bertolli's Vidalia Onion & Garlic.

I'd gladly pay a little more for something good. Any suggestions?

I usually use Classico's Four Cheese Blend tomato sauce when making pasta like manicotti.

I'm lactose intollerant so I can't have any with cheese. I also try to stay away from artificial ingredients and preservatives- usually the better sauces will have olive oil instead of soybean (or sometimes a mix).

I thought you meant tomato sauce.

What's the difference? They can be used for the same purpose.

There's a lot of difference.

Tomato sauce is tomato sauce. Just tomatoes. Usually comes in 3oz cans.

Spaghetti sauce is spaghetti sauce. Tomato sauce + spices + other stuff (cheese, garlic, mushrooms, olives, meat, etc). Generally comes in 1qt bottles.

Classico makes a bunch of different varieties besides the Four Cheese one. They've got a regular (just plain tomato sauce) version that is pretty good also. I love having cheese with my pasta, so that's why I usually use the Four Cheese blend.

Yeah, I've tried some Classico, I like that specific Bertolli one better.

I really like Safeway select brand... it's cheap, but it's packed with veggies... really good!

Personally, if we are just talking tomato sauce, I like Contadina the best. Hunt's is the worst.

Trader Joe's has Mario Batali's sauces in jars now, they're very good. Sometimes I get whatever strikes my fancy at Agata & Valentina. The Bertolli's you mentioned is very good as well.
