i have two vai albums, Passion & Warfare and Sex and Religion. i love P&W, amazing album. i hate S&R, terrible album. anytime he sings, forget about it. so what other Vai albums should i pick up?

same goes for eric johnson recommendations. i love his guitar playing. hate his singing.

Sex & Religion is the best, blasphemer. It's a Steve Vai album that actually sounds like a band's work rather than a platform for one man's masturbation.

I genuinely lost interest in Steve Vai after Passion and Warfare, which is absolutely brilliant to the core. Especially after Alien Love Secrets he went over-the-top into the self-indulgent and self-conscious category. Therefore I would also pick up his first: Flex-able.

I understand the critique, but in my experience, you either like guitar virtuosos like vai, or you don't. There's really no point in asking for a recommendation from someone if they don't like Vai/Yngwie/Satch/Petrucci/etc.
