Survivor Type is about a doctor stranded on a desert island with nothing but a pound of heroin...

for Short stories, nothing beats 'Skeleton Crew'. the first story (can't remember the name..) was awesome!

For full-length, I'm torn between The Stand and IT. The Stand was an absolute epic, and I think all of King's works should be compared to it. But for full-blown, creep you out if you read it at night types of stories, IT wins hands-down. Both books were amazingly similar, with the obvious difference being there was a biiig plague VS a killer 'clown'.

Installments: Dark Tower, bar none. Green Mile sucked; it was like reading a newspaper. Dark tower has so much that hasn't been explained (if it ever will), that keeps you wanting to read it. In retrospect, he probably won't finish the series in his lifetime, given the 3-4 year span between books, but who knows.. he could get really inspired, and polish off three in a year...:)

It and The Stand was good as well..

Series would have to be the Dark Tower series.

The Stand and the Dark Tower series are his best novels, and The Mist is his best short story (If you can consider over 100 pages to be a short story). That one still creeps me out today.

Has anyone here read Hearts in Atlantis. What a load of crap that book was. I want to write a letter to Stephen King demanding he give me back the 10 hours of my life it took to read it. There just wasn't any point or conclusion to the story he told. Grrrrr....

$hit that's a tough one...

The Dark Tower is awesome of course :)

The Stand, Tommyknockers, Dreamcatcher, they're all so damn good.

What makes King's books so good(mostly, there are of course many good things about them:)) is his way of describing characters, you really feel with the characters in his books.

The first story in Skeleton Crew is The Mist which I mentioned in my list. For information on The Dark Tower series go to Stephen King's website. It gives the release cycle. From Stephen King's interview with himself:
Steve (sighs): All right, where are you vis à vis The Dark Tower?

S.K. Well, Book 5, Wolves of the Calla, and Book 6, Song of Susannah, are both done-down on paper, anyway. I'd say the last book, which is simply called The Dark Tower, is about a third of the way. That's a total of 1900 manuscript pages since last July.

The Stand... just don't read it during Flu season.... ;)

His short stories from when he was a young man are very good... They're under a pseudonym which I can't remember at present....

The name was Richard Bachman. The best ones are compiled in The Bachman Books. He wrote under that name to try and prove people bought his books because they are good not because they had his name on it. He was only half right.

'IT' is the only Stephen King novel that I've read. I think it's about 1069 pages long, IIRC. I read it eight times  I used to love books back then :) Don't get much time to read these days :(

Have read all of the books written under his name but have not been able to "get" into the series.

Have to say "The Stand", one of the few books in my life Ive read more than once. (Original and longer re-release)

Love most of his work.

Has no one mentioned "Salems Lot"? Not a vote for best but the circumstances I read it under, it scared me to death.
