Best state?

Having lived in California I would say it mostly sucks. Even just talking about scenery, it mostly sucks. The beaches are nice, yes, but lots of other states have beaches. Pretty much anything California has for scenery, the pacific NW has better (unless you like desert, blasted wasteland, etc...and even then we have eastern WA and OR).

My list of states in the running:

Alaska
Washington
Oregon
Maine
Vermont (lacks the beach aspect, but the outstanding politics makes up for it)

Having been all over the place I say it indeed is Colorado. More days of sunshine than San diego, the mountains, the wonderfull climate and fewer people in the entire state than most big cities. So many more reasons to love living here.

I'm from Arkansas and I would wager that Cali is the best, not because of the people/culture etc but because they have it all. Everything form beaches to snow in the mountains.

A state with both beaches and mountains isn't that tough, we have both here in Virginia. Plus in most other states with beaches you have actual sand to walk on rather than rocks and can actually swim without freezing your ass off. While I like the scenery in CA (lived in Monterey for 3 years), I don't know if I'd go so far as to call it best in show.

I should add, I love Alaska but I can't really call it a place with good climate.

Probably not for everyone, but some of us love that climate. I've actually heard people make that claim about the southern United States (east, west, and central) and that just blows my mind. I can't imagine how anyone could like a place that's hot. I also can't understand how people can stand the humidity in the Southeast, or the dryness of the Southwest.

Hey, I personally love the cold, but I'm willing to wager that the mass majority of the people living in the US do not love it enough to live in Alaska year round.

I've only been there a couple of times during the Summer but how long are your Winters? Are you able to get out of your homes often during those cold periods?

I'm not from there, I just love it. I frequently think about moving up there, but so far haven't been able to. I live in Washington...which isn't too bad, but does get warmer than I'd like.

I just moved to Denver from St. Pete and I love it, you have to take into account the 3-5pm rain shower and the 95+ degree heat and the humidty. florida was OK but too many New Yorkers and just too many people in general.

the upper peninsula of Michigan. we have lots of forest, great small towns, great people, lots of snow and lots of sun. I would totally vote Michigan if i could forget about D-town.

otherwise i really like North Carolina and Oregon. I would like to move to somewhere around Oregon city. I love the mountains. CO is right up there as well.

Northern VA (Not VA, just Northern VA) owns all. We have everything in terms of oppurtunites (every major tech company/defense contractor has a major branch here), we're the richest (average income/household) in the entire nation, we have sic bike trails, the best public schools in the nation, and we have DC if we get bored. Plus the people are generally nice depending on where you go.

We're also the only reason VA has any money, and no we don't have sourthern accents. We're also about 50/50 split democrats/republicans. I could go on forever.

We own.

Yet it also depends what degree of cold you are after. Fairbanks cold? Or Anchorage cold? Anchorage cold I can stand because I have stood it. But there is no way I'm about to endure a -50 winter in Fairbanks. Although the Northern Lights are a good tradeoff.

I've lived in Massachucetts, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Nevada, Wyoming, and Kahleeforneeya.

Each has its good and bad points.

Overall, we hated Utah the most...(fucking Mormons) and Colorado next.
(We saw this bumper sticker quite often: Welcome to Colorado...See our scenery, spend your money, then go the fuck home!)

Idaho was good, Wyoming was better, (but bone-chilling cold in the winter) and Washington was meh. (both of us are Spokane natives)

Kahleeforneeya over all has been the best, but with the constant illegal immigrant invasion getting worse, we're to the point where it's time to bid a fond farewell to the great Granola state. (it's full of fruits, nuts, and flakes!)

We'd love to move to Hawaii, but the prices there make San Francisco or New York look dirt cheap. We've considered moving back to Wyoming, but I don't think I could take the cold anymore. I'm too dammed busted up.
