1. IV - A New Hope
2. V - Empire Strikes Back
3. III - Revenge of the Sith? (Probably, based on what I've heard of it and what I know about the others.)
4. II - Attack of the Clones
5. I - The Phantom Menace
6. VI - Return of the Jedi
1. A New Hope was the best. The film had a great beginning and a discreet ending. When ANH was released there had never been ANYTHING like it before. The dog fighting between the X-Wings and TIEs and the canon run at the end were simply awesome. And throw in the wise cracks being made and the inside jokes in between the action scenes and it was great. Plus GL just kept hammering away at us with one great action scene after another. That was simply a work of art.
2. Empire's next in line for second place. When I saw that for the first time ( around 7 yrs old) I was like, WTF?. It ended on a bit of a cliff hanger with Lando and Chewie flying off to save Han. I thought that would have been a cool team up to see and I wanted MORE. Left me feeling a bit irritated. The movie was excellent, though. It was much better than the ones that followed.
3. I didn't see Sith yet so can't really comment on it. From what I've seen in the previews it looks great and I think the fact that it finally brings back the Darth Vader we loved from IV-VI is going to get it to third on my list.
4. I'd say Clones is next. It was better than Phantom Menace but it had it's flaws too. WTF is up with those love scenes between Anakin and Padme? The scripting and acting in those scenes was horrible and detracted from the movie. It just didn't mesh well.
5. The Phantom Menace was worse than Clones but, better than Jedi. Here we have the first Start Wars movie to be released in 16 years. GL just HAD to throw in some dumb-ass alien (Jar-Jar) just for comedic effect and to keep it light for the kiddies. Also, watching that 10 yr old Anakin running around like a little brat the entire movie just put me off. I came out of that film feeling like something was missing. Now, the fact that Liam Neeson was in it was cool. He made a great and believable jedi. The Sith they battled was cool too.
6. Return of the Jedi is the worst. Jedi pissed me off (was 10 at the time) because of those damned Ewoks. I mean, WTF? You take a great epic like Star Wars and then throw in a bunch of teddy bears to run around duing one of the most important fight scenes? It also destroyed the trilogy for me because here you have the army of the rebel alliance. This showed that the army of the rebel alliance completely sucked. They were such an ineffective fighting force that they had to have a bunch of little teddy bears wielding nothing more than spears and arrows to come to their rescue. C'mon. Really. This made Star Wars seem less of an epic for the ages and more of a commercial to sell toys.
