pfft.. why even bother re-inventing the wheel? rc.firewall is the way to go. Just download your favorite Linux distro and install that firewall script.

All Linux firewalls are just going to be front-ends to iptables or ipchains, just pick one that works well for you.

I've used fwbuilder a bit and like it, it generates a lot more than just iptables scripts too so you're not limited to Linux.

I have clients who have used Smoothwall with relative success. If you're not interested in learning Linux/iptables/etc. (assuming you aren't already familiar), that seems the best way to go, imo.

Smoothwall is great. But the freeware version is just too restrictive unless you want to pay for the professional edition which let you have all the features of the IPTABLES implementation!
