If you want to get into sportbikes, any used (older) 600 would be good. Examples would be Honda CBRF3s or F4s, Yamaha YZF600s and Kawasaki ZX6s. Suzuki Katanas are also good bikes :). I mention the previous bikes for their still_good performance and good ergonomics.

Anything I could get for ~$500 would be good, I couldn't care less if it is a sport bike or not.

Street or dirt or both.

Best all around bike for my is KTM 525mxc. I have it dual sported and can still MX it.

I actually have a friend who is 5 feet tall and had a GSXR-1000. He dropped it a couple times, but once he got used to it, he rode it like a champ. Unfortunately, it was stolen and he can't afford another one because the dumbass only had liability insurance.

If I could find a bike for less than 500 bucks, I would seriously consider it...if I could get 40+mpg vs my current ~28 city, anyways..
