Wing Commander 3. While I loved the plot, upgrade mechanics, and the ability to act as a trader/mercenary in WC: Privateer, Privateer loses out because the AI of the enemies sucked;.

If you're talking about space sims, Freespace 2 easily gets my vote. (although I'm probably a bit biased, having been active in the Freespace community for over seven years :p)

yah, starlancer was horrible (story and acting-wise)...the only good thing about it was that you could play the main campaign in co-op mode

Here I was thinking 2D space shoot-em-ups. :p

I've been having an assload of fun with Jets N Guns lately. Total flashback to Raptor: Call of the Shadows with the upgradeable weapons, and who can argue with a heavy metal soundtrack? :D

What I want:

A modern wing commander.

What I dig:
space dogfights (of course)
Attacking capital ships with a fighter and having to pick off gun turrents, engines whatnot and slowly take it down.

What does this today with graphics that will at least give my modern card some workout?

The original X-Wing imo. Not only was the fighting good, but there was alot of strategy involved in keeping your energy/shields/engine levels tweaked depending upon the situation. I remember playing with a friend that would take care of the levels and targetting while I would fly and fight because sometimes it was so hectic... good memories. Good variety of ever evolving mission types also.

Sometimes it made me want to tear my hair out, but I'd rather have that than an easy game that I beat fast.

If I had an extra 20 I'd SO buy that game! Especially for the metal soundtrack!

The entire soundtrack is free to download in both MP3 and OGG format.

Machinae Supremacy
Don't forget to grab "Hero" off their site releases - it's in-game but not listed under the OST.

x-wing alliance, original x-wing vs tie fighter..

but Independence War II was really good. Ya, the character designs/animation sucked hard, but the premise and the story was awesome. It also tried to emulate real space physics.
A lot of battles were fought going in circles, haha.
