best solution to cool scsi hard drive?

Im running an internal IBM 36GB lvd drive.... it heats up very well.. I had a fan blowing from the under side of the drive (ghetto I know) but that seemed to resolve the heat issue.. I just disconnected the fan right now because it was just a little to loud (yea just one fan 3dfx cool) Is there any other quieter solution?

question: whats the worst that can happen if the scsi hd remains HOT? could it die?
 
Running it hot will shorten it's life, not sure how much though.

Anyway check out 3dcool.com, they have some nice hard drive coolers that are supposed to be pretty quiet too.
 
Heat can shorten its life span, but as long as you stay in its specs you should be fine.

If you've got quite a bit of spare cash, all Lian-Li mid/full tower cases have an innovative removable hard drive rack design that sits right behind the two front intake fans, so the HD's stay cool without any extra fans (no extra noise). Some Coolermaster cases have hard drive mounts right behind the intake fans too (although not a removable rack). That's pretty much the only solution that doesn't require extra fans. There's also 5.25" bay coolers, but they're big, unsightly, and still have fans. There is a possibility of a passive hard drive cooler (just an encasing that acts like a heatsink), but I haven't seen them.
 
Am using 2 removable Hard Drive trays. They are cooled by a small fan sucking outside air over HDs into case. Am using IDE IBM 40 meg @7200 with temperatures about the same as a person with a high fever. Got these at Altech for $15 + Tax. SCSI models are higher. Since they are removable; you on need 2 trays for your 4 drives!!

SCSI drives run a good bit hotter too, I have a 74G 10K RPM Cheetah that is hot to the touch, enough that it starts to hurt after like 3 seconds.
 
there are a lot of options...but I will concern myself with explaining the effects of heat.


If the drive had aluminum platters, which I dont think it does, it could basically suffer the fate of the 75GXPs. Although the 75's were temperature weak, you IBM could heat up to a point where the aluminum plates would expand too mu h, and the heads would lose track of their position, thereby ruinning the drive...actually it might recover

Most new harddrives, including IBM 120GXPs use Glass platters. Like the sand from which they are made, the platterwill not expand or contract with the temperature changes present..it takes a few 10000 degrees to do that😀
 
I have seagate cheetah scsi drive. I put it behind the intake fan. The hd runs cool. The case is antec sx1030 with 2 removable hd cage.

 
kendogg, if you have the bays to spare: I took a bracket for a HDD in a 5.25 bay, just one, and strapped a 80mm fan to it and ran it a 7v. Yeah, it may not look real pretty and it takes up two 3.5 bays (blowing from the top onto the drive) but my SCSI drive is wayyy louder than the fan that cools it and now my drive is warm, but not nearly hot to the touch.
