Best solution for this problem? (dead spot in house, powerline network + ap?)

Hi,

I'm trying to help a friend fix a dead spot for wireless access at their house.

Room A has modem + wireless router.

Room B is a dead spot and needs wireless.

They have a range extender that I can plug in right outside the room, but it still doesn't let the signal inside, so here's what I'm thinking: get a couple powerline adapters and hook up an access point to the end of it directly inside the room, so it would look like this:

modem > wireless router > powerline A > powerline B > access point (inside the room)

For the powerline I'm thinking either:

or

Recommendations on access point?

And this should work, right?

TIA

Powerline might or might Not work. Try it, but make sure that you can return the devices if they do not provide adulate solution.

Extender cut the signal by 50%. Thus it might be that the signal past the Extender would Not be highly functional.

Dual Band Wireless as the main source plus added Access Points connecting to the Main Router via cable is usually the most successful solution.

Using Access Points or Wireless Cable/DSL Routers as a Switch with an Access Point - http://www.ezlan.net/router_AP.html

Best solution is run Ethernet and put a wireless access point in that room. This is always the best quality solution but not always an available solution that's something you two will have to figure out.

On the range extender, you do not put it where signal is bad to extend the range, pick a place between room a and room b where signal is still good and power is available and try that instead.

Power line is an iffy tech at best becasue unless you wired the house electric, you do not know the path, how many splices, and potential fail points exist, as well as the quality of the wiring. The only real way to find out is to try it and see.

I understand what the best solution would be, but we're looking for a low cost option. The range extender doesn't get the signal into the room, even if it's placed outside the room. There's just a dead area in there where the signal doesn't come through.

I understand the iffyness of powerline tech, I've used it before, but my question is should this work in theory, the way I showed it?

modem > wireless router > powerline A > powerline B > access point (inside the room)

?

And if so, what are your recommendations for a cheap access point (since it only needs to provide a signal inside that room)?

Cheap, dead Zone, chance, inexpensive, are nice words in English but do Not considered technological parameters.

An additional inexpensive Wireless Router can be b/g, b/g/n, a/b/g/n. Which one? depends on the Wireless source and the need in the "room".

Taking a Laptop and use its Wireless to measure the signal in the hallway and inside the room using an app like this - http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_network_view.html , might provide technological info. to help you make a decision.

The info presented thus far all for one solution. Pray and hope for the best.

The 'need' in the room is just so her daughter can use their wifi on her iphone rather than burning through 3g data. It doesn't have to be super intense/fast, just sufficient for stuff like Facebook.

Any recommendation on at access point?

Run a cable to about mid way, buy cheap ASUS wireless router, configure for DHCP pass through and be done with it.

For some reason I read the topic on front page as dead spouse in house, powerlines.

You should just run a main Ethernet line as far as you can to about halfway to the room. Wherever you believe good wireless signal will pass.

At that point either an extender connected to your main router or a wireless router / gateway should provide you with wireless access to the second room. Might be annoying with Ethernet cable but you will have better chances. If the room isn't far run a cable all the way to it and set up a gateway there.
