I have used GetDataBack several times to recover formatted drives for clients. It's not free, but it works very well and there is a free demo version that will let you scan the drive to see if it can be recovered before you pay for a license to actually recover the files.

I'm not sure if Recuva will find files after the disk has been formatted but you could give it a try - it's free.
