Best software for ripping DVDs (to make backups)?

thanks

Sort of. Supplement DVD Decrypter with RipIt4Me and you should be able to handle most disks. In the rare case it doesn't work, try out the (above mentioned) DVD Fab Decrypter.

seconded, I have yet to find something that doesn't work with RipIt4Me, DVD Decrypter, and DVD Shrink.

DVD Fab is good. My personal combination that has worked GREAT is:

1) Ripit4Me to help rip the DVD and clean up the VOB files
2) DVD shrink to take the output from Ripit4Me and create the DVD. I usually burn stright from DVDShrink, but will sometime save to ISO and burn with Nero. You need some version of Nero installed to runs with DVDShrink - I just have the OEM version that came with my Burner.
I have found the VOB preparation from Ripit4Me to be superb, and I can finally get every movie to play on all my DVD players.

100% agree - but so far RipIt4Me + DVD Decryptor has worked 100% of the time for me, but I keep DVDFab around in case I might ever need it.

Anyone had luck getting DVD Shrink to run under Vista?

App crashes for me as soon as I launch it.

Some other forums are talking about a Beta 3.5 version?

I used Shrink on my Vista over the weekend without a problem. Before using it I set it to Admin and run as WinXP, ran like butter.

I usually use RipIt4Me (uses Dvd Decrypter & FixVTS) and Shrink(uses Nero) for perfect backups.

Are there any simpler one-step solutions (like there are for CD's)? I don't mind paying for the software as long as it doesn't install bloatware/adware/spyware/etc. I remember 321's DVD X was popular until it went out of business.

You may want to check out Handbrake. I hear they have a new Windows UI for their client, which might actually make it useful. Bear in mind however that Handbrake is primarily used for taking DVDs and ripping them for iPod/PSP/iPhone/AppleTV/hard Drive... so I don't know about putting them on DVD since that really isnt my thing. I like using the actual DVD rather than a backup

Thanks but I was looking for something dedicated for one-click DVD copying. Something minimally resource hungry and relatively minimally featured. After losing a few discs to damage recently, I've decided I want to use backup copies while keeping the originals safe.

DVD Shrink has a lot of features but you don't necessarily have to use them. If you use it with Nero and don't dig too deep into the settings it's very simple to use.

1. Use DVDFab Decrypter to copy DVD to the hard drive.
2. Use DVD Shrink to edit the DVD you copied to the hard drive to get it to fit on a DVD, then use it to create an ISO image of it.
3. Burn the ISO using imgBurn

Hopefully someone can help me, I have never backed up a DVD. I want to backup the kids DVDs. Researching here and using Google still leaves me short on understanding a few points. Plus, I don't want to trust software found in Google which wasn't referred from here.

I just want to make backups, not rip to the HD and change format to MPG format or anything. Just a backup that can be played in a DVD player.

I hope there is a free utility that can do this. I don't know if these DVDs are dual-layer or CSS protected. Everything I own, and everything I've rented has played in my Philips DVP-642, I don't know if it plays dual layer or not. My DVD burner is a Sony DRU-720A.

So, If I want to just copy one DVD to another DVD, why do I need to shrink it to make it fit. I don't understand this point. If a backup program backs it up bit for bit, why does it need to be shrunk.

Any help or guidance? I prefer free version recommendations for Windows XP. I own a Nero 6 license (I suppose newer version to), but I seem to understand it doesn't really copy these copy protected DVDs.

Thanks.

I'm far from an expert but...

Standard recordable DVD's are 4.7GB while most retail DVD movies are larger in size than that. If you want to fit a retail DVD onto a standard recordable DVD, you have to shrink the original to fit it into only 4.7GB of space. You can "shrink" by decreasing the picture quality or by cutting out parts of the retail DVD, which some software allow you to do. If you don't want to shrink, just pick up dual-layer recordable DVD's, although they are quite a bit more expensive. You can also spread the movie across multiple standard recordable DVD's.

I tried using DVD shrink, there is no sig. difference in picture quality with dvd-9 ( dual layer) and dvd5 ( single layer) format, or at least I can't see the difference.

DVDShrink can be made a 1-click solution if you set it up right.

1) install anyDVD ($) or DVD43 (free). These will run in the background and decrypt on the fly. anyDVD is considered to be the best at removing dvd encryptions

2) run DVDShrink as normal, in the options set it to "make ISO and burn with DVD Decrypter", and proceed with the backup (auto burning requires 2 dvd drives, one to read and one to write)

3) this is an optional step, but there is a patch to let you use imgburn to auto-burn the dvd backup ISO instead of dvd decrypter. I don't remember where i got it but my file is called DVD_Shrink_3_2_b_w_IB.zip
