Hey Folks,

I am looking to upgrade my system from a Celeron 700 with 384 mb pc100s. I'm doing this the wrong way, but here it goes. I have just recently purchased 3 sticks of 128mb Kingston ValueRam pc133s. After rebate, I will have purchased them at $5 a piece. I initially wanted to go with a DDR memory system, but I didn't want to spend the money for the memory. However, I stumbled across this deal and now I am trying to build a system around the memory. I know, I know, this isn't the way to do it. However, with the kt133a boards and xp chips tumbling in price, I think I can do this for under $150, including $15 spent for the memory. I have the other devices.

From my research, kt133a boards seem to have what I want: pc133 sdram support and Athlon XP support. My question to you is what is the best como? What is the best kt133a chipset board out there? What should be the optimal chip match? I am tempted to get XP2000 at $87 shipped, but at the same time XP1600 at $53 shipped sounds good also. I am currently looking at Soltek SL-75KAV and MSI K7T TURBO2. If I get the Soltek board, it has the red storm overclocking program, and supposedly, it is really easy to overclock. Let me know. Thanks. Oh by the way, someone here at the forum said XP1700 is unlocked. Is this true? If so, is this the only XP chip that is unlocked? Thanks in advance.

I won't tackle all your questions but I'll give you a bit of info. The "Red Storm" overclocking software is not what it is cracked up to be. In fact, in most instances, it is useless. I know that some have had limited success with it but as a rule, it is not good. So, take that out of the equation. However, that MB is an excellent one for what you are looking for. If you are determined to stay in the KT133A chipset, IMHO, that is one of the best MB's you can use. I must also add though, that I don't have any "real world" usage of the Soltek SL-75KAV to compare it with so take it as that.
I have built two systems with the MSI MSI K7T TURBO2 (including the current one that my wife uses) and I can say that it has been an excellent board for her.

I'm also very interested in the answers to the questions posted by freshspace. Hope to see more replies from those who use/used or have info regarding the KT133a.

Don't forget you can get a Sis chipset that will do either Sdram OR DDR. Also there were some early KM266 boards that had Sdram and DDR ports.

My MSI Turbo 1 is still working great. Fast and stable.

I'm running an XP1600+ on an Abit KT7a. 1.7GHz, 10k 3dmarks (2001SE). Cheap memory, cheap cpu, cheap board (about $60). I won't claim the Abit's better than all the other kt133a boards, but it works great for me.

Be careful choosing a mobo...make sure you can talk to people (like here ;)) that use it...I've had a few KT133A based boards that just did not like AthlonXPs, while many (most?) do just fine. However, for a cheap mobo I'd have to recommend an SiS735-based MB.

Oh, and don't forget about replacing the PSU!

Careful there ... with PC100 RAM, you cannot use an Athlon XP. Most Athlon chipsets, including KT133A and SiS 735, do NOT offer a mode of operation where the CPU bus runs at 133 MHz (as required for Athlon XP) while running the RAM at 100.

With your newly bought PC133 stuff though, you'll be fine. There are few KT133A boards nowadays, as far as I know, ECS K7VZA is still around and a solid budget choice (and it DOES run Athlon XP). If you can part with one of the RAM sticks, boards like K7S5A gives you an upgrade path to DDR.

Off tangent a little here..But does anyone here know how well the ASUS A7V133 works with Athlon XPs'(Stability and how high can you go 1600+ - 24/2600+)? I got rid of mine just as they(XPs') came out and went with a K7T266 Pro2/DDR combo. I never got to try my A7V133 With the XP. Damn good board though..

EDIT..Uhh, Ok, I am a dork.. I posted this and then found another thread with the answers I wanted.
