Best Smart phone on ATT for long battery life?

As the title says I am about to get a new phone. I currently have a Samsung Capativate. I really hate how I had to install a custom rom for "ok" battery life.

Right now I am looking at Samsung Galaxy 2, Iphone 4S and HTC Titan (if it comes out in the next 2 weeks.)

I have a love/hate relationship with Android. iOS is ok and WP7 I have only used in stores for 30-45 mins. My old 3GS when I first got it was rock solid and great battery life. The Samsung screen just looked much nicer but the phone plagued with lag/horrid battery life. I have fixed the lag with a nice custom rom from XDA but rather not have to root to make the phone almost as smooth as a 3GS. Tethering is nice but I was stupid one month and dropped my unlimited data trying to save some cash.

HTC from what I read here and other sites has a pretty bad track record for phones with good long battery life.

HTC is bad with any OS.
I don't know what the S2 gets, but the iphone 4 is excellent, 4s is supposed to be way better.

iPhone... 4.

Judging from Apple's released specs, the 4 gets better battery life than the 4S. 300Hrs of standby vs 200. 10Hrs of WIFI browsing vs 9, and so on. For some reason, Apple claims more 3G talk time on 4S, but that's that.

Maybe because of the antenna?

have one last go with your captivate. I have had a love/hate relationship with the phone, and until i put the rom on now i was getting horrible battery life. (10-12 hours with minimal use, 8% drain per hour even when the phone is in standby)

I was using apex with horrible battery, and now im using pinnacle 1.2 (a KH3 rom) and my phone battery is absolutely awesome.

The phone basically doesnt drain at all when im not using it. (less than 1% per hour) I leave for work at 630, and with moderate use, i get home at 4 with at least 60-70 percent left.

Try it out!

all iphones prior to the VZW iphone 4 used infineon radio chips which are engineered for europe. VZW iphone 4 and 4S use Qualcomm radio chips which are better

iPhone, no doubt. I run an Inspire with CM7 w/ TalonACE kernel which is good on battery life, but the iphone is definitely better w/o a doubt

The iPhone 4 has the best battery life, they achived this by doing things like disabling flash and having an external antenna. Personally, i wold choose good battery over those two things in a heartbeat - despite their shortcomings. Aparently Apple made that decision and it was a good one. But, the 4 still doesnt have a good enough battery. Mine barely lasts a day when im heavily using it. I cant imagine getting a giant android phone with it being worse...my dads thunderbolt dies after hours becasue its soaking up the 4G networks. If the iPhone did something like that - it would get flammed off this planet. Cant win.

iPhones are in another class. My 3GS (which isn't as good as the 4) got so much better battery life than my new SGS2 that I am having to rework some of my habbits to fit in some charging during the day if I am using it heavily. Luckily it works with my Energizer battery pack.

Not that the SGS2 is bad (WAY better than my friend's Evo 3D) but the iPhones are a step above.

Another +1 for the iPhone 4/4s. My Bionic battery life was good by Android standards stock, but not as nice as my iPhone 4 was. With the custom rom I have they are close, but use throughout the day I'd give the nod to the iPhone 4. After 12 hours I'd usually have 70-75% at least on the iPhone and I usually have about 65-70% on my Bionic.

SGS2 is supposed to be on par with the Bionic for battery...maybe a little better.

For android, the SGS2 and it will be smooth out of the box, otherwise the iphone will be better.

For battery life, iPhone 4.

Alternatively, maybe one of these Android's like the SGS2 that can take a bigger battery. More bulky, but you double the size of the battery.

Actually that is true and I had forgotten about it. I believe samsung themselves sells one that is larger and adds just a fraction more width to the phone, which is so thin already it's not likely to matter a whole lot. Comes with it's own revised back plate that basically makes it flush with the camera ridge now.

Right. That's exactly what I was thinking of. Someone posted a link to one on here a while ago.. like over a week ago.. with a place in the US that you could get one.

i think the thing that makes the ip4 get better battery than the android phones mentioned, is the fact that the screen is so small, and uses much less power than a 4-4.5" phone.

That being said with the proper ROM, my captivate is as good or better than my friends iphone4/3gs

for example this is my captivate:
screenshot8sp.png

Moderate usage (you can see the dips when i used it most. I use facebook, twitter, bluetooth, wifi, google voice, some games, etc.) You can also see how slow it drains when the phone is in standby. Probably could go 2 days if i just used it for the occasional call/text.

heres another day when i bascially did nothing for the first 5 hours:
screenshot9u.png

just an example of how well an android phone can run with the right software. The captivate was originally known to have a terrible battery, but obviously this isnt the case. I can only imagine how long my phone would run with an extended battery, or how much better the sgs2 will run once its optimized.

That being said i have had problems in the past with this phone with certain roms. When my phone has the right rom, there are no problems, but without it, it was awful. I guess you can say the ip4 has best battery life without any fuss.

you're on wifi the whole day and you only got 1 day out of it... not to mention the last 1/3 of your day was light usage.

that would be decent if you were on 3G the whole day, but even then decent. The iPhone 4 can easily go for 1+ days even with moderate usage. I've seen this with my friends many times. Android just does not keep up.

And no, disabling flash is the least of your concerns to whomever mentioned that. Just standby hour by hour Android uses far more power. Some dude on XDA spent like weeks comparing his Nexus and iPhone and the power draw was just always in the iPhone's favor.

Honestly I hate those graphs of people showing 48 hours battery. It means nothing when you're on wifi 24/7 and do practically nothing and have nothing syncing on your phone. The iPhone does great on 3G AND with push notifications buzzing all day long....

I currently have an HTC Inspire through ATT and the battery life is atrocious. It won't last 24 hours whether I'm using the phone or not.

Asking a smartphone to last 24 hours with use is a lot. Without use is a different story.

I have seen several occasions where my android phones (and tablets) suddenly start showing drastically reduced battery life. It always turns out to be an app keeping the phone awake when it should be sleeping. You can figure out why your battery life when to crap if you know what to look for, but many users probably don't know what to look for and they blame the phone/OS. This is clearly an area for improvement on android.

Best battery life without changes is iphone. Apple makes great phones and their battery life is often as good or better than most phones.

With changes such as different rom, an android phone is a very good choice.

I have a mythouch 4G. If I use it lightly (1 or 2 5 minute phone calls, screen on lowest dim setting), it lasts a little over 24 hours. Once I make the screen brighter, battery life goes down hill fast.

Also, what is the "rom" you guys speak of?

For android devices on AT&T, you won't get better than the SGS II with its 1650mAh battery..

Overall best battery life is the iPhone 4 by a wide margin.

Samsung released a 2000mAh battery recently. Although it does make the SGS II somewhat thicker or more like level on the back. Not sure how much xtra life it gives tho.

I might check out the SGS II after work at Bestbuy. My local Att store doesn't have it in stock yet. Debating if I wasn't this one or gonna wait for new wp7 phone. I need larger screen as the iPhone 4 don't cut it anymore.
