Best site for travel plans

After the new year, I may look to travel a bit. Would you recommend any travel site/agency or recommend that I do this myself? Or, have I not considered all the options?

The traveling would involve possibly three destinations, and I haven't decided regarding rental cars or anything yet, but I want to shop around for the cheapest/quickest routes.

I've read Maddox's review of Orbitz, so I haven't included it. But, if you select "Other", post with some helpful information!
 
I find Kayak to be the easiest to use. If you are a student, check out STA Travel. Depending on your destination it might be worth it to look at individual airlines.. it depends if the places are on the budget airline circuit (for example flights within Europe you don't want to be using Kayak, or flights around east Asia).
 
To specify, I'm thinking inter-state travel solely within the Continental US. Not for a vacation really, and I'd stay with people I know, so I don't need hotel hook-ups.

I saw this quickly and thought "great, ATOT delivers with a roll-your-eyes, unhelpful response again; this guy wants me to kayak everywhere!", but then I actually read your post. Thanks for the indeed helpful tip!
 
farecast is pretty useful. use it to figure out which airline has the best prices and then buy direct from the airline. buying from some site like travelocity/priceline/etc almost always leaves you paying a few extra bucks for "convenience charges"
 
Last minute deals can be the shit for flights...otherwise Kayak is pretty good.

It does not hurt to try orbitz, travelocity, etc either.
