Best / Simplest software to split wav mp3 etc files?

I've found Goldwave extremely easy to use. Sorry not completely freeware but there's a trial period. I don't know how it's limited though.

So I would have to select arbitrary sections and paste them into new files?

I remember my friend had this small app that just took an mp3 and spit it out into several files with a couple clicks.

Yep, cut and paste. You can visually see the wave, so it's easy to identify silence or whatever criteria you are using to break the track.
