yes, you'll likely have to go with overclocking though. grab a mobile athlon 2500+, an abit nf7-s, 512mb of mushkin ddr, radeon 9800 pro, and an antec case wtih psu. it should tally up around at $700. overclock it to 2.2ghz or higher for better performance.

Right now i have a p4 northwood 3.0ghz OCed to 3.3 with 880fsb-1gb, dual channel GEIL ram, pc3200 440mhz. Radeon 9800pro, non OCed with VGA cooler. I can run at Ultra settings with a few tweaks, check out this site. I also have two raptors running RAID0 which helps, but in any case I can play single player with sweet visuals but not killer lag. The one thing that doesnt change until the 512mb cards come out is the load pause at doors.

I don't see why so many people recommend getting a mobile 2500+ when all the reports in the OC forum show that the 2400+ and even the 2200+ still hit 2.2 GHz just as easily.

For a little under $700, you can get a 35W Mobile Athlon, an Antec 350W case, a Shuttle NF2 board, 512MB of Corsair CL 2.5, and a nice $200 Radeon 9800 like the MSI one with the XT core. For just about exactly $700 you can also get a 160GB 7200RPM 3-year drive and even an NEC 2510A.

do u have a frys nearby?

antec sonata case = 90-30 = 60AR

amd atholon 2700+ barton combo with mobo $90

kingston 1gb 3200 $160-30 = 130

9800pro retail 199

wd 120 gb 80-30 = 50

nec drive from newegg = 60

total - $680 before rebate. $590 after.

btw for overclocking i think the ecs mobos have default optiont of 100/133/166/200 mhz so those are your only options. you can always get stuff from newegg.

IMO the higher rated mobiles are more capable of going beyond 2.2GHz than the lower rated ones. Reports I've seen indicate that the 2500+ (and even moreso the 2600+) are more commonly capable of hitting 2.4GHz and higher on air. Not that a 2200+ couldn't go that high, but getting one capable of that seems to be less common.

The performance difference isn't huge but it's only another $20 or so for the 2600+ over the cheapest mobile, so why not gamble on it?

The diff between a 9800/5900 is much less pronounced than X800/6800. The Radeon is still the best performing last-gen card for the enthusiast on a budget.

If the 6800LE ever makes it to retail, though, I'm sure it will replace the 9800 in most recommendations.

you may be able to cut expenses by purchasing a 9700 pro rather than a 9800 pro ....

My box (2500+ overclocked, 1GB of ram, 9700 pro) can handle 1024x768 in High quality (with no AA) pretty good. 1024x768 in medium quality plays perfect.

I'd also like to recommend a gig of ram is VERY important.
