bah, I answer these questions a lot. Not here, though, so don't worry :)

Running shoes are very important. Also, there is no one shoe that works for everyone. Everyone's feet are different, as are their strides, their form and how their feet react to landing. Therefore, there is no way anyone can recommend a running shoe for you without knowing all these things about you. In other words, only by going to a running store and getting fitted can you get the best shoes for you. However, I can recommend some good brands. I primarily use New Balance, although I've also ran in Mizunos, which were very high quality as well. A lot of people swear by Nikes, and others swear by Asics or Saucony. Those are the main running shoe brands, and all of them have shoes suited to different runners, so there's a lot to pick from.

I know Newbalance.com use to have a guide that told you how to examine your old shoes and see what kind of new shoes you would need... they probably still do.

This guy knows what he's talking about. Everyone's feet are different - there's no master one shoe that works best - different ones work for different people. My cousins are all collegiate soccer players and for running they all prefer Adidas. With my wide and flat feet, I've really gotten to like New Balance. (Adidas and Nike were always too narrow for me) Others swear by Saucony, so it just depends.

Since I've started running I've consistantly used Brooks. Very long lasting and have different models for different feet. IE the beast for heavy runners (hit feet hard).

I personally prefer the Adrenalines which fit my form well. I have one bad experience w/ NB quality and haven't gone back. Once you find your shoe don't bother changing it, it will just cause problems.

also you gotta test the strength of the sole by twisting it. If you can twist it very easy then it will not give you a lot of support and likely lead to more injuries than a stable shoe. Adidias have "torsion" to help with that.

I would stay away from Nike's.

I'm interested in this as well. I just started running in the morning a couple of weeks ago. Right now I'm just running in a pair of Nikes that I have had for nearly two years and they are still holding up as well as the day I bought them. But I haven't been running in them very long so I can't really comment on longevity while running. Anyway, since my shoes are about two years old, I would like to buy a new pair.
